Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

No, not really. That "expected assists" figure includes every chance he created whether it was finished or not

It's all about whether you buy into the data stuff (but most clubs do now use this - Everton have literally just bought an entire data analytics company and the guy who ran it is now our head of data analytics) but essentially it works exactly the same way as xG - Fellows, if people had converted an average number of chances he created based on the quality of the chance created, would have ended with 7 assists. He's a massive statistical outlier.

Now the decision you'd have to make is whether or not that was a fluke and going forward he'd revert more to the mean, or whether he really does have magic in his boots that mean players are going to finish far more of the chances he creates than they would for anyone else.
Just to follow on from this, almost nobody ever consistently exceeds their expected assists, it just doesn't happen. Even Messi - one of the only players to ever consistently exceed their xG - didn't at Barca, and think about the players he was passing to to finish.

Player price is still affected by raw output though - so if you have two identical players with 7 expected assists, but one with 5 full assists and one with 14, you are going to pay a lot more for the second one, even if they made the exact same passes. Buying low vs buying high.

Mbuemo is a great example of this - he is a good player but he DOUBLED his xG with his goal return this year, so United are probably huuugely overpaying for him. It is roughly as likely, given the shots he got off, that he scored 5 goals instead of 20. Would United be likely paying £60m for him then? And he's not a consistent overperforming finisher - this season is the only time in the PL that he his goals have exceeded his xG. He's underperformed it every other season so far.

I think we should go for a player that can play either as a central striker or as a wide player, someone like Richarlison. If he is available for £20m, as it has been reported, we should be all over that. I know he has had injuries at Spurs but from an attacking perspective he improves us massively and I think Moyes will get the best out of him.

Fully agree on all of this, especially the notion of signing a versatile forward that can cover CF when necessary. In fact, due to the sheer numbers we need, I think versatility is essential. Signing another player that can only play CF seems very counter-productive.

The RW position is interesting. Seems Moyes wants a left footed dribbler to allow for cut in and shoot play - basing this off the fact that McNeil ended up there when he returned towards the end of the season.

However, a CF like Barry (or Beto) would surely thrive on crosses, so maybe a right footer is the play? I wouldn't be opposed to a couple of options. If Fellows is available at £15m then that covers one of them as he's a pure RW with a killer cross. Given it's such a squad game these days, he'd have time to bed in and work on the physical things our armchair experts are convinced he lacks.

Left footer? Maghnes Akliouche is the man. Rapido, ace dribbler, young and one move away from being worth £70m. Buy now at the right time and we've got a star who we can flip in a couple of seasons for £££

I agree, ideally we sign 2 players who can play there and offer different options, one that is a fast right footed winger that will beat the fullback and get a cross in and another one that is Left footed and can cut inside and take a shot. We need a 2 proper Attacking fullbacks one on the left and one right to be able to provide width and crosses when we are playing with the RW and LW that like to cut inside.

The report is a supporter/fanzine owner having a wild guess at what they might accept. Not a chance they let him go for that, certainly not to us.

Correct, but Villarreal can hold other clubs to it if they don’t want to sell, and that is what they did. Can’t see how that has nothing to do with his value, that was literally the price we had to pay to buy him. Other Clubs didn’t think he was worth that.

He was locked into a 4 year contract worth £15,000 a week that he signed last summer.
He’ll be on at least 5 times that here, and it’s guaranteed for the next 5 years.
his release clause was €40m, we paid €32m

We didn't pay his release clause, that's why it's irrelevant. There are also plenty of reports that say other teams were interested, but apart from that you're doing great.

Apparently other clubs did come in for him in the last two weeks, but the lad stuck to his word even if Villarreal were trying to stir it all up. Bodes well in terms of character and integrity. ;)

Yeah the Barry one should open people's eyes a bit to the realities of these things. Generally speaking (there are obviously exceptions because everybody is different) playing in the PL is a much bigger draw than playing in the Europa League, and even bigger than playing in the CL for a team that isn't going to win it. Going to one of the English teams who have Europe is a bigger draw, as is going to one of the proper big hitters in Europe, but the reality is most players would choose Burnley even over someone like Ajax because the PL is where players want to be.
Spot on.

Also interesting he mentioned the fans .
No doubt some up and coming players have seen the team coach arrivals over the past few years with the atmosphere inside the ground.
Coupled with a fantastic new iconic stadium , forward thinking owners ( with money ) and our best players being signed up will go a long way in their choices.
We look a totally different package than a few years ago.

Maybe this explains Michael Keanes new contract mate.

Do you not think we need another striker? I would 100% go for someone in their latter PL career who can super sub it. Then we can send cheemitti in loan.

Dunno who though, I don’t like Vardy, Wilson is too injury prone
We can, at a push, manage with Beto and Barry. In an emergency Ndiaye can fill in up top. Not ideal, but, we've a lot of positions we need to cover before a third choice striker.
