2024/25 Michael Vincent Keane

I said earlier, he made 5 appearances under Moyes and we won 4 of them. As much as I don’t rate him particularly highly and would obviously want better, I see the reasoning and he isn’t the bogeyman that loses every game like people make out.

Any team that plays their 4th choice CB is going to be weakened, but Moyes gets the best out of people and is good at the man management side.

The other side is, he will surely know the general feeding about him and he is still prepared to sign another year. People comment about his mental strength, I’d say that shows some big kahunas
Precisely. Nobody is ignoring his limitations. We know what he is, and what he isn’t.

The problem is expecting us to bring in a replacement for buttons, to happily sit on the bench most of the season who will also be capable of better.

Yes all those things are issues that need addressing if we want to improve. Surely the aim is to improve the squad. We had an opportunity to do so here, a big wage was going off the wage bill and we could have brought in someone that could have bc challenged the other CBs, provided a better standard when playing, and maybe could have even covered full back or defensive mid (Keane can’t cover either). Perhaps we may even have used the spot for developing a younger CB who would bring value in the future.

Instead we just rolled a year on passed up the opportunity. I know we don’t have control over what the club does but people calling it a sensible move or that they’re happy with it, really? I disagree.

it’s a sensible move if he’s ok when needed

it’s not if he’s not

We might have that problem next year , do we keep him once again?

Hopefully next year we will be in a position to strengthen the starting positions, leaving him redundant.

At the minute, signing backup centre backs isn’t really the best use of our resources, given the amount of work that needs doing.

We need to strengthen starting positions this year as well?

Keeping a liability like him isn’t the best use either. I really hope we can get the academy sorted, could have saved us a few quid by promoting youth.

You’ve not read anything I’ve just said.

We can’t fix it all in one window.
We currently have no right back.
One senior striker
No right winger
One left back
2 centre midfielders

But sure. Let’s go and blow money on a fourth choice centre back, big brain.

If Keane being our 4th choice centre half is the biggest issue we have in the squad at the end of this window i'll be very happy. If it isn't, then him signing a one year extension won't have been anywhere near the biggest failing of the summer. So either way, it just feels like an overreaction.
