Confirmed Signing Thierno Barry

Once again, where was our interest when he was moving for £14m last season……
Better yet, was he even heard of when we were spending £15m on Chermiti…..

You have just proved why finding them earlier does not exactly work out that easily.

You have used an example of how its not really worked.

Chermiti come in....and was not ready to be thrown in...need much more dev.....the same as Barry would have done.

Now some other team has taken that risk and developed him....we pay more for him, thats how it works.

We've gutted and replaced our recruitment team from last season though, mate. I do understand that general frustration, but this just seems like good, old fashioned Everton moaning for the sake of it. The new management team like him and we're getting a deal boxed off ASAP. That's a good thing.

Everything looks obvious in hindsight. Every player signed by every club in the world could in theory have been purchased earlier in their development for less. It's a weird stick to beat the club with.

Exactly, scouting is not an exact science and as you go down the age pyramid the number of potentially good players exponentially increases. We could try to sign the next Barry for £15m but that would be much more of a risk than signing a player who has had a successful season in Spain. I would sooner sign someone close to the finished product than take a risk.

I hope that James Smith and to a lesser degree, Nick Cox will also be asking this question in time. As should Angus Kinnear.

Yea spot on.

Had we signed Barry last season, no way would have have got the game time he needed to develop his game and reputation, no chance.

Villareal have taken that chace, and should reap the rewards of a larger fee, thats surely how it works ??!

Exactly this.

We could have signed him earlier and he wouldn’t have developed as he should have.

However we’re signing him at an age where he can still develop and possibly be sold on for a healthy profit - see Gyokeres

People are writing Chermiti off too soon aswell. He’s barely played because of that injury - and by all accounts he looked sharp in preseason and was set for a run in the team.

If we had signed him a year ago, would he have developed in the way he has though? Highly unlikely he would have got enough game time to do so at that age.

Yes we need to find players before the big fees but by doing that we will have a lot more misses than hits, ie Chermiti so far hasn’t exactly excelled when really he could have done with another year of first team football.
