Crystal Palace and the Europa League

Its funny when a smaller team gets done, even through no fault of their own, the punishment they get hits them proper hard. The Drogheda situation, that half a million could take a lot of financial pressure of them for a season or two. The likes of City or Chelsea just blatantly break the rules and get a fine that is pocket money to them.

Drogheda have been told they’re out. Will have to go to CAS

Its getting a bit ridiculous in a couple of years there wont be many club not in a Multi C.O.

They will have to accommodate it, or risk the viability of their competitions.

Or annoy enough people to have a look at setting up alternative competitions.

Ultimately this is a fight Uefa wont win.

Yeah, but accommodating it risks the integrity of the competitions, which means the worst outcome for fans: corruption and turning a blind eye to it.

I think its corrupt anyway mate, this just seems like being over bureaucratic, they are letting lids in with the blind trust anyway.

There will come a point where most clubs are in a MCO and that will undermine the integrity anyway, they need to accommodate the structure and put guidelines/safeguards in place.

I don't disagree - but I think this is the inevitable outcome of multi-club models, which, in my view, are an abomination.

UEFA are playing lip-service with the blind trust nonsense and hammering small clubs. There is no way such a ban would impact a top club.

I've more or less given up on club football now, anyway. It's utterly rigged. Even international football - for all its many virtues - is being Frankensteined with bloated tournaments and Saudi sportswashing.

The game is, to use the parlance, "gone."

It is being reported in a number of places this morning that Textor has sold his Palace shares to Woody Johnson, former US Ambassador to the UK, owner of the New York Jets and heir to the Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical firm.
So, if confirmed; hurrah!
This deal, on the face of it, will allow Palace to compete in the Europa League next season, in reality, Palace's share structure and constitution should have allowed that anyway. This deal gets UEFA off the hook and will avoid the legal challenges to test their “rules” and previous precedents set when some of the powerful clubs were nodded through.
We await confirmation.

Really hope this happens and justice prevails. Palace deserve their shot at Europe.

Hope this is true. It would really take the shine off of winning the cup to miss out on Europe. Forest v Palace will have a bit of an edge to it when those two meet after that clown tried to get Palace booted out.

UEFA may have shot themselves in the foot. Drogheda United's owners offered to do what other multi club owners did but were told it had to be done by 1st March.

So same logic is that its too late for the share sale and will have to argue that with only 25% voting rights he didn't exert any control.

I do hope ye get in but if cos of the sale, Drogheda would be mad not to seek damages from UEFA

Well, UEFA have shot themselves through the foot in the way that the general process of multi club ownership is governed and this will continue to be a huge issue. My understanding of the Drogheda situation ( and correct me if I'm wrong, I only have this from the press) is that Drogheda's owners have an 80% shareholding and an 80% shareholding in another club in the same competition. That is very different from Textor's investment in Palace. Yes, Palace could have ensured that Textor placed his shares in a blind trust by March 1, but what for, when Textor neither owns nor has a controlling interest in Palace? The blind trust stuff is only to get around a situation where someone either owns or has a controlling interest in more than one club in the same competition. Textor didn't and UEFA would have (may yet still) rule that way. The sale is a convenient get out for UEFA as it becomes self evident that Textor is not involved in both clubs.
The Drogheda ruling stinks, they qualified on merit but the rules (the ones that Palace have benefitted from) are not fit for purpose.

Agree with you.

I think there is a strong argument on his control and not having controlling interesr , just sale of shares now shouldn't improve the cause

I believe it takes a few months for the premier league to approve the deal right?

It took a while before friedkin got approval I think around 12 weeks.

The Europa league group stage draw is on 29th august which is in under 10 weeks

Don’t see how the deal can be approved on time
