Computer games.

I'm many years too late to this party, but I've spent about 20 hours with Red Dead Redemption II over the last couple of weeks, and it's absolutely incredible. I've not been this absorbed in, and impressed by a game since probably Metal Gear Solid. Work of art.
As someone who has played video games since the 70s, and spent over a decade working in game development, I can safely say it's the finest open-world, story driven game ever made. It goes beyond just being a video game. It's an experience.
Come back and post your opinion of the game once you've finished the main story. I'd be interested to hear your take on it.

IMO that's BG3, but not by a massive margin. Horses for courses at the end though,

Absolutely agree. BG3 is a great game, no doubt about it.

Personally, a modded Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas (Tale of Two Wastelands) on PC is my favourite gaming experience to date with RDR2 a very close second. In terms of technical achievement and story telling though, I've not seen a better open-world game than RDR2.

Skyrim on PC is the game I've invested the most time and energy into. I even made a weather mod for it which became popular, so that game has a very special place in my heart as well.

I think that the mark of a great game is it's ability to draw you in and make you invest your time and energy into it, making you it's bitch ☺️

I'd personally go BG3, RDR2 as a close second, but in terms of BG3 imo it lags behind in a lot of ways (with the caveat you kind of have to be into DND for BG3, I suppose, so it's not a straight forward/familiar experience?).

Skyrim is a great game that everyone's started a stealth archer build for, abandoned it, and went for something else. Genuinely so many things in it that there's many (of us) that have yet to finish the story mode as doing the random things is just... fun.

As I said, everyone's got a preference for what tickles their fancy obviously, and honestly I'm glad it's like that - variety in fantastic games is a great thing to have and I'm happy for that and for everyone finding their thing. I never got into Fallout personally when it was time (so trying it again recently), or Cyberpunk for example, but the fact they're still alive and so revered is a great "problem" to have for when I want to pick them up again!

Modding is also a bottomless pit to get lost in, in all those games - BG3's is also hilariously huge. Also, if you've not tried it, highly recommend the Divinity series for great RPGs.

I just can't get into top down turn-based games which is a shame I know. I've always found them to be a required taste. I think I just can't handle it when there is too much going on in my field of view.

I'm also guilty of having a list of games that I put off playing for years only to find that by the time I do play them, they look very dated - enough to put me off playing them. The current market for remaking pre-DX11/12 games has never been so big and I believe we will see a lot of game companies exploiting this for at least the next 5-10 years.

I think A.I. will completely transform not only how video games are made and rendered, but played. I can see traditional game customization, user preference and modding being replaced by user prompts. It's really an exciting time as a gamer, to think of the endless possibilities we could have.

I suppose you could say that A.I. is going to completely transform how we consume entertainment full stop.

Anyway, as I was saying, RDR2 is a good game 🤣

Never bothered me to be honest, just takes an hour or so to get used to it  Unless it's some very old game, its usually just getting used to it for a bit.

But yeah, top down turn based is a hit-or-miss for many people really, which is fine and fair.

There are mimes for enemies, french clothes, talking marionettes are their version of moggles. Its French as %$#@ but in a good way. Initally they had a fantasy London setting and it wouldn't have been as good.

The story is very good (and unique too), the battle system is really fun (takes about 3hr to get used to) and has one of my all time fav boss battles in the midgame for spectacle/atomsphere alone. The english dialogue and voice talent crush it.

The only flaws is that a lot of environments are samey (less so as the game goes on). There is an early dungeon called Flying Waters goes on for about 1hr too long that might rub people the wrong way. Plus the minigames suck (optional) and are impossible. But really that's it.
I nearly put my controller through my TV on the parkour/tower one.

While we are on the subject of favourite RPG’s…

Good summary, cheers. Sounds like one I'll play a few months later and then think "Oh yeah, is good actually".

I made a grave mistake and played it on the PS4. The loading times broke me and stopped about 2/3 in. I took a stopwatch and it took 35 sec to get into an 8x10 shack and then another 35 sec of loading times to get out. Great writing tho.
Shame, still one of the most unhinged gaming experiences I’ve had. Played through it a bunch of times.

Within my first 20 minutes of my first ever playthrough I told a racist truck driver to go eff himself, called the bar manager a incel and tried to arrest him, yelled “I need money” at a random woman until she gave me money, and did an awful karaoke performance. Hardest I’ve laughed at a game possibly ever
