Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

Why can’t we sign a good centre back and have Tarkowski as the backup?

The defence is probably the least important part of the squad to strengthen, but it's also the most interesting.

As of the summer we should have;

LB: Mykolenko
LCB: Branthwaite
RCB: Tarkowski / O'Brien
RB: Patterson

It's whether Mpyes wants to stick with the defensive nature or go for attacking players.

We also dont want too many players as were not in europe + are 'blessed' in that O'Brien and Mykolenko are experienced at both full and centre back.

I do think we need a 1st choice RB & LB and a young CB with potential, maybe from the Championship or Europe, to to complete the CB options.

As you say the attention is needed midfield and forward areas, but we don`t yet know what the situation is with Gueye, Doucoure and DCL yet, now might be the right time to rip the plaster off with all 3 taking over £5m a season each in wages..... £15m of our £74m annual wage bill is just these 3 players, over 20%.

If the only player we kept from the current loans and contracts ending was Alcaraz, this is what we`d have, yes we`d need more but it is a good young platform to build from...

Pickford

Patterson

Tarkowski
Branthwaite
O`Brien

Mykolenko

Garner
Iroebugnam

Alcaraz
NDaiye
McNeil

Chermiti

You could also argue Tyrer, Crellin & Armstrong, also potentially Dixon, Tamen, Benjamin & Sherif might take up a few of the development spots but we wont know till after pre season. Some of the better U21 could do with a proper loan, that U21 league isn`t really fit for purpose.
