Summer Transfer Window 2025 Thread

The West Ham and Spurs Way....................................

I honestly think most people dont know what they mean by "Good football" to be honest, or it means something different to everybody.
Instructive that you immediately conflate "good football" with West Ham and Spurs.

Personally, there are many, many sides who come to mind first for good football - good, winning football.

If you don't think Cahill, Fellaini and Ferguson had good technical ability I can only assume you never saw them play? The point wasn't that we should sign a load of 4ft nothing players who stroll around never putting a tackle in and playing constant tippy tappy football, it was just that we have an opportunity to bring in players who are actually good footballers, able to pass to eachother and control the ball in less than 8 touches, that type of thing.

If we went out and assembled a squad that was quicker than most others, taller than most others, and had more technical players than most others then whatever style or system the manager was or wasn’t playing would be much less relevant.

It’s why that Chelsea team was able to win under numerous different managers all playing different styles.

Unfortunately though this is easier said than done. If we drew the league table and ranked it before a ball was kicked in terms of overall squad quality then you are then looking for a manager to over or under perform that. I said at the beginning of this season I thought we had somewhere between 12-15th best squad, perhaps 13th.

If we really want to move on next season we need to be drawing that league table at the beginning of the season and seeing Everton in a far higher position but will we really?

It’s a genuine question as to what position is feasible. Will we have a better squad than any of the sky six on paper after one window? No. Will we have one better than Newcastle? No. Will it be better than Aston Villa’s? Probably not.

So already we’re looking at 9th place at best and that’s before you even start considering how Nottingham Forest Brighton Bournemouth might line up.

That’s not to say we won’t or couldn’t finish higher but once again we’ll be asking an Everton manager to over perform with the resources he’s got. If we have Moyes the 11th best squad in the league and he brings them 11th people on here would be fuming with him.

Meanwhile Guardiola only needs to perform to par to win the league because he has the best squad. Arsenal and Liverpool managers can underperform and finish 3rd pretty easily as their squads are of that baseline quality.

We have an awful lot of rebuilding to do to get the squad back up towards the top of the league and we should have all our focus on that rather than blasting managers for not playing x way or in y style.

My point really was that I would like us to sign players who have the technical attributes which will allow them to adapt to different situations and play in different ways. With the best will in the world, there's only so far you can go if half your squad can't pass the ball and aren't comfortable taking the ball under pressure. People end up putting stuff down to mentality and the like when we give up a lead and just ignore the fact that we aren't capable of actually taking control of a game because we can't keep hold of the ball for more than 10 seconds. It's not about being a snob in terms of style, it's about recognising that you will only ever get so far if a load of your players treat the ball like a hot potato.

Oh completely agree. That’s why I think we need to move away from Coleman Keane Gueye Doucoure Calvert Lewin even Tarkwoski eventually. They just can’t handle a football. The rest aren’t much better, perhaps only Ndiaye being passable. He’d prob be on the bench for a top half team realistically.

It’s the same with papers who think we’re sitting back because the manager is negative and if he just ‘went for it’ we’d be dominating the game. We’re sitting back because the cumulative pace of the team is a lot lower than most opponents so we can’t close gaps, can’t chase counters, can’t pressure opponents, so we end up filtering further and further backwards to keep defensive solidity and close space aka ‘sitting back’.

If we increased the cumulative pace of the team and their technical ability this wouldn’t happen. Look at the difference one player with technique can make, as soon as they get the ball the defender backs off them worried about being embarrassed, suddenly there’s more space for everyone. It’s why City have so much time even when they’re playing walking football, no defender can commit to close any player because they know they can play out of it. Opposition teams know the slightest pressure and our players will cough it up immediately.

Good piece. For me , top 10 and a very good cup run should be our target for next season.

Yep 100%. This is why I hate it when people say stuff like 'the defence is fine it's just the attack we need to sort out' as if the 2 aren't linked and our defenders offering nothing with the ball isn't a major reason for us playing the way we play.

You said style, not good football mate so nothing is conflated. I reference both, as they often reference the WHU or Tottenham way...... in their fan culture an emphasis on style over substance id suggest often times to their own detriment.

Its very much seen in some WHU reaction to Moyes or Spurs fans reaction to Graham or maybe a better example as not ex Arsenal, Ramos.
