Thanks but I can’t help thinking I’ve let her down by chickening out of visiting, I only have to be there for a short time she has to live there. Husband’s aunt went into care and the home she was in was lovely, really homely in the nicest sense but this one is on a different level…

That’s sad isn’t it. The CQC are supposed to regulate and inspect but inspection is not the way to drive up quality. My daughter in law works for a care home group in the north west called millennium care and they are brilliant. For example they have linked in with the Manchester Camerata orchestra to introduce music for people with dementia, when they found out she could play the piano well they encouraged her to work with this orchestra and now she’s the music ambassador for the homes going round doing group sessions and individual music sessions for people who are too poorly to join a group. They also had some men who loved cars and so the guy who owns the group bought an old battered moggy minor and employed a guy with the skills and between them all they did it up and now use it to take a couple of residents out for ice creams and the odd pint. If ever I need a nursing home I want to go there.

It is sad the differing qualities in care homes. I had a lovely phone chat with my sister yesterday, initially she would t come out of her room in her care home, but they phoned me back after lunch. Her dementia is slowly taking over and she’s living about 20 years in the past most of the time,but she’s a.ways happy and cheerful. Her costs are around £55 k per year and one day her money will run out and we’ll need the Council to take over.

Morning playmates ( one for the older posters - oh that's all of us - mum used to love Arthur Askey).

Mum ....is well challenging and increasingly unpredictable. She can go from being really narky to the sweetest thing.

Took her for her COVID booster jab yesterday and then later she had her ears micro suctioned - good as gold. Took her tea over and it's " that's too much on my plate how to expect me to eat all that " and threw a strop.

Every day seems like groundhog Day. Very sunny and very hot again. Will do a bit of gardening first thing and then tonight when it's not quite as hot.

Think @Barnfred 55 is traveling up today so safe journey mate and same to @Val P and to @Gwladysover and @anjelikaferrett for later this week.

Unfortunately we didn't get any rain yesterday ( although I believe there was a thunderstorm as close as St Helens) and so I was watering yet again , just trying to keep the shrubs alive at this stage. The cricket field is really suffering with grass already dying in the outfield.

I find it shocking that you can be ill with dementia and need care and you have to pay for it ( if you have the means ) but if you are old and are recovering from a broken leg you go into a nursing home and the state pays regardless of your means.

It’s a disgraceful anomaly in this day and age. A friend of mine used to run a garage in a nearby town, but he has now partnered up with builders and private care providers to build a large Care Home. He was explaining all this to myself and another friend. It all sounded good until he mentioned the care costs would be £1500 per week, we were disgusted tbh. £78k per resident per year. But that’s how Care Homes are viewed, private enterprises making large profits from people who are dying. The government should nationalise the lot of them, under the umbrella of the NHS…..

Feel your pain mate, my mum is knackered with dementia.

My dad’s looking after her but I can see the effect it’s having on him.

Her sister had it too so it’s looking like hereditary.

I don’t have a great relationship with my parents but I go round and see them a couple of times a week now, though I can only manage about 20 minutes each time.

Keeps having moments where she is saying everyone is stealing her stuff and asking where her mum is. Told my dad the other week he needed to go home and made him sleep in the spare room.

Sorry to hear this, but I fully understand what it’s doing to your dad. I’ve been dealing with this for three years with my wife and feel permanently tired. Keep looking after your dad as he will need all the support he can get…..

My mums sister lived in Torrevieja for 25 years. When her husband died was pretty much on her own. Eventually we started getting phone calls saying people were worried about her as she was showing signs of dementia.

To cut a long story short, me and my sister flew over and brought her back to the U.K.
I’ll never forget the look on her face back to Alicante airport, like she knew she’d never be going back.

As soon as we got her back to the U.K. and out of her environment she deteriorated dramatically, literally within the space of a couple of weeks and had to be put into care.

It was incredible to watch somebody deteriorate so quickly.

She had a great life though! Was an original bunny girl in the Bahamas in the 60’s.

Her and her husband had pubs and bars all over the country and a couple of businesses in Spain.

My uncle actually ran the Man City supporters bar at Maine Road in the 80’s, as well as a pub in the newly built Arndale centre when it was opened, a place called the Forum in Wyrhenshaw, The old bank in Barrow, the number 3 in Blackpool and a few others.

Such an awful way for her to go out, but what a life she had.

Hi guys, it's nice to read about some lovely care homes. Unfortunately in my job I get to see the worst of the worst - financial abuse, neglect, physical abuse. You can however tell when the care home is decent and has unfortunately employed a wrong 'un by the witness statements and the attitude of the other staff who whistleblow. My own view is that there should be a regulatory body for carers - much like there is for doctors, nurses and other professions. Wales has one - it's about time England followed. I would also introduce a mandatory qualification that carers would have to do. As for the cost - absolutely scandalous. It bugged the life out of me on COVID when care homes charging thousands a month were moaning about not getting PPE from the Government- given the level of profits, they should have been buying their own. I agree with Pete - bring back longterm geriatric hospitals. My Granddad who had dementia spent his last couple of years in a long term geriatric ward in Rainhill hospital. He, and all the other elderly gents, were so well looked after.
It's another sunny day today. I'm going to the gym in a bit - I need to burn off some calories for the forthcoming weekend! I also need to lose another half a pound to take my weight into the next stone down so the motivation is there.
Finally, I made an absolute tit of myself today. I had a bloke round to look at our double glazing. Some of the panels have failed so he was measuring up to replace them. I was showing him which windows and we went into one of the bedrooms. The cat was asleep in her basket on the bed. She ran out of the room. I said 'You don't have to go you can stay here' not realising that the window guy had his back to me ( measuring the window), and thought I was talking to him! I have never been so embarrassed in all my life! Fortunately he saw the cat in the doorway and her basket on the bed so my lame sounding I was talking to the cat , appeared credible.

Well there’s been talk of a “ National Care Service” for years , talk also of putting a cap on the amount individuals have to contribute eg £100k max, or not having to sell their homes to pay for care home costs, but once a party is in government and are shown how much it costs they quickly back away from it . Sadly nobody is going to tackle the issue any time soon

Some difficult reads about Care Homes today in here. You never think it will happen to you but you just don’t know how life will turn out. I was visiting in one in December and it actually seemed quite nice. My loved one was just in for a weeks respite and was full of praise for the staff and the food. The place even had a bar which is I believe popular with the resident gents when there is a match on TV. Having said all that, thank God there was no charge for the weeks stay!!

Good morning all on this dull day here .I hope all ahad a good night and have a lovely day today . Nothing much happening here as I reached across the rear seat in the car and tore a muscle which in turn has my other shoulder aching ,the joys of getting old ! So me time on the roof is not happening but I have some wood to chop so we will see .
I think the leaving of the Grand Old Lady is hitting me at last ,I have been looking upon it as a new car deal ,yes I liked the old one but this new one has special features ,recently I have been going back to the times when we had so many in the ground I could lift my feet off the ground and not drop -I know I must have posted before - and some off the games I have watched ,my neice on her first visit watching us win 8-0 against Southampton of all sides ,to announce she will not be going again because it is boring .

Morning everyone,

Anyone seen the Goodbye Goodison documentary on SSN ?

Emotional stuff and available on YouTube.

So, the Old Lady isn't being demolished and will be the new home for the women's team. Brilliant news for me and certainly means I will watch at least one women's game every season.

It's still the end of an era on Sunday and I will go to soak up the atmosphere and hopefully not make a nuisance of myself - some very strange comments by ST holders saying that those without tickets should stay away and leave the are clear for them - selfish gits ( but reassuring that Goodison won't be bulldozed afterwards).

Anyway table tennis summer league starts tonight and I've agreed to play for a team in Preston. Don't know anyone there so it should be interesting to come up against players that I don't know. Hope it's a friendly league. Wigan is incredibly friendly. Liverpool is , as you can imagine, super competitive and as a result unfortunately less friendly bucking the trend for Scousers , but it's sport isn't it!
