Travel thread 3.0

…literally just got back from Turkey. These days holidays are all about top quality hotels with great food and booze, we don’t do sightseeing anymore, we go where we get spoiled. Anyway, we found this lovely family hotel in Turkey after a recommendation, so this time we brought our son, his wife and 3 young daughters.

We weren’t disappointed, it was terrific and our Grandaughters loved it.

The downside; the flight from Liverpool was full of half-wits going for ‘Turkey Teeth’ and ‘thick lips’. On the way over we had to re-route and land at Budapest so that a woman who was totally out of control, smashed on drugs and booze and trying to light cigarettes could be arrested by Hungarian police. The trip back wasn’t as bad but full of scroats with teeth like Donny Osmond but gaunt from drugs.

Such a shame, I doubt we’ll ever go to Turkey again. Mrs Eggs and I are off to Cyprus in a few weeks.
In Turkey now (Bodrum). All inclusive, adults only which at £700 per person it’s hard to moan about.
Our favourite Turkey hotel is TUI’s Residence in Fethiye. Unadulterated luxury. Once you’ve been others just don’t compare. Expensive though. Might go there later in the year. We are here because my daughter and her friend wanted to come with us and wouldn’t be prepared to pay Residence prices.
Would definitely tecommend @Eggs but it is adults only.

…we do our adults only when it’s just the two of us. We have a fantastic one we’re going to next month, the list of gin on AI is ridiculous, and Aberdeen Angus steak available every night. Expensive but worth it for us.

Our daughter is very keen on Ikos hotel chain, we tried one of those and will do another in September. That has adults only section, ideal because we’ll be doing a week on our own before my daughter, husband and kids join us for the 2nd week.

croatia and dubrovnik are beautiful,i would just be aware that the area will be absolutely rammed during the summer holidays.
prices have almost doubled since they adopted the euro and i prefer montenegro now,its still a stunning place though.
Echo your comments. Went to Split (Makarska), Pula, Porec then Rovinj in successive years. The first two were pre Euro and it was more than affordable. The last two I couldn't believe have much prices had risen. Bad enough for us tourists can't imagine what the inhabitants thought of it.

I went to Turkey once, takes about 3 hours to walk down a street with all the lads trying to get you into their shops.
Depends where you go, some places (Alanya is well known for it) are worse than others. Never had a problem - as long as you are courteous and do not just ignore them (they hate that).

….i went to Porec when it was part of Yugoslavia. Long time ago, you could hop on a ferry and visit Venice. Lovely area.

….lots of Russians in our hotel this last few weeks. Not sure if that reflects Turkey as a whole but we found them extremely rude and bad mannered. No idea if it’s cultural or a manifestation of increasing tension with westerners. Generally unpleasant.

I instantly fell in love with Croatia when our cruise set us ashore by tender in Dubrovnik. That's when I decided to give a land based break a whirl. There's not a lot to dislike about the former Yugoslavia, the weather, the food, the stunningly beautiful dark haired women and of course Tomislav dark beer.

What’s the name of the one you’re going to next month?

Generally the Russians stay in and around Antalya Province (mainly Kemer and Antalya), and most use the 5 Star/AI hotels. I promise you their manner has nothing to do with the current tensions, the majority are rude and unpleasant to deal with in my experience. The Turks really dislike their lack of courtesy, and as a result some Turkish businesses deliberately hike their prices up when they are dealing with Russians.

…that’s where we were so makes sense, no shortage of money by the looks of the ones in our hotel.

Both. Certain parts of Thailand have Russian language music and menus to cater for them and it's rare to meet a nice one.

Had a three night stay in Vienna this week. Very pleasant trip. Great public transport system and lots to see and do in a very grand European capital city. Took a ferry down the Danube for a day in Bratislava in Slovakia as well. Also an interesting place to visit. Very different to Vienna. More like the village in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Kept expecting the child catcher to appear ...
