2024/25 James Garner

Might just be me but it's a similar thing with Lindstrom at the minute and it's that we just seemed to turn out better performances when he's on the pitch. You can't say it's because of him but you just observe the games we've done well in the last few years and this season, Garner has normally been in there. Underrated player, one for the future at Everton I always thought.
He plays most of the games though, so it's quite difficult to put any stock in that. He plays in some of our better performances and in some of our worst performances, I'm not sure he's the deciding factor either way.

Honestly thought he’d be great taking set pieces given the way he shapes up to the ball. Abysmal this season. Awful.

Generally he’s not caught the eye as much as last year. Another player we don’t seem to quite know where to plonk him to get the best out of him, as he does have some natural abilities. Not sure he knows how to unlock himself either. Maybe too risk averse with the ball?

We will definitely still have “decent and honest” players like him in the squad for a good while yet. No issue with it being him.

Feel like next season will be massive for alot of this squad with us looking to turnover the squad. Likes of mcneil garner myko ect been good in a very limited everton. Will be asked to do alot more now and will need to show it to get in the first 11

I think he’s better than Mangala, and that he was an integral part of our upturn in form post-Dyche. He’s still a bottom half prem player though.

I think Josh Brownhill would offer just as much, if not more, and he’s available for free! If we want to progress we have to make the most of opportunities like this!

Selling Garner for 20 million with a free replacement waiting in the wings means that our 40 million budget for a right winger now becomes 60 million, for example. Or, that money is used to further strengthen central midfield. It could be used to get hold of Soucek, for example.

Swapping Garner for Brownhill and Soucek would massively upgrade our central midfield for a net outlay of near zero if we were to sell Garner this summer and reinvest in this manner.

If we want to progress we have to get relegation specialist and certified Championship yard dog Josh Brownhill, on a free, and sell a 24 year old midfielder who can only get better and is already solid enough as a defensive/central midfielder? And add Soucek to the mix for some reason, while paying actual money for him.

Yeah, okay.

Yes, okay.

You’re acting like James Garner has a better pedigree than Josh Brownhill when he just doesn’t, at all.

If Brownhill is a certified yard dog then so is James Garner, except Brownhill is a yard dog that has just scored 18 goals and got six assists from central midfield in the championship this season. I doubt that Tim Cahill would ever have got that type of return in the Championship, never mind James Garner.

Soucek has 8 goals from central midfield in the PL this season (the type of return we used to get from Cahill) and is quite simply a massive upgrade on James Garner.

The aforementioned goal returns from this season alone probably exceed what James Garner has achieved in his entire career.

Yes, amazing.

Brownhill has played in the Prem, and has scored less than 10 and assisted less than 10, from a more advanced position, while taking all/most corners and FKs for a team playing for corners and FKs. Better than Garner for sure, but the Championship doesn't translate to PL obviously. Garner is also a defensive/central midfielder and Brownhill is much more attacking. Cahill was scoring 10+ for Milwall and took him some time to get going for us, but we also got him when he was about Garner's age, not close to 30.

He also has big ears and looks like him and Tarkowski might be related.

Soucek is a good player, but he's pushing 31, and giving money for 30-31 year olds is NOT going to take us forward for more than a year. Or signing them on a free from the Championship. Very short term thinking imo.

Never forget that this is a regular suggestion when you are amazed that Brighton and everyone else have bought yet another (sub-)20 year old who's doing well for less money. We're just not allowed to use scouts or anything it seems.

Anyway, we'll probably sign both of those, re-sign Doucoure, re-sign DCL, get rid of Alcaraz and proceed to shout stability, as the next manager comes in in 2 years will be facing an uphill battle with yet another ageing squad and a rebuild on their hands. The Everton way.

Whilst everyone is bone-ing off Brighton and their miraculous midtable finishes, they have already been overtaken by Newcastle and Forest, who both instigated their turnarounds by signing an over 30 Chris Wood!

Youth needs to come through rather than be relied upon imo, and we are actually in a very good position to have Armstrong, Alcaraz and Iroegbunam all coming through in central midfield. They’re great prospects but Moyes isn’t going to be able to rely on them during his contract at Everton. They will be for the next manager imo.

If Moyes can find the next Arteta and sign him then sound, let’s go for the next Arteta instead. But if we can’t do that, then we need realistic alternatives that bring about immediate upgrades. Not eventual upgrades that take 3 years to get going.

Well, it would have to be a lower premier league side, as that’s his level. We’d be looking to the likes of Coventry to take him off our hands should they come up.

What’s your valuation of Garner? The 20 million was a rough figure, change it to 15 if you like, and I still think what I’m proposing is well worth it.

I believe that Brownhill would come to us rather than go anywhere else because I think we would be by far the biggest club interested in him. Similar to when we picked up Tarky.

What the hell? Do you think selling a player and replacing them with an alternative is so far-fetched that it could only occur on a computer game?

I can assure you that player trading actually takes place in real life as well. It’s been going on for ages tbh.

He does seem to get rattled a bit, like last year;

20th Feb 2024: “I can understand the fans' frustrations but there is so long to go and we need the fans to be supporting us and not booing us,” said Garner.

... so wouldn't be surprised if his IG/Ross Barkley sulk like blackout is a reaction.

Whether fans should criticise or boo is one thing, how a professional handles it is another.

He needs time out of the squad. It's a fact that the longer a player stays away from the pitch, the more our fans rate him.

I'll be honest, he doesn't set the world alight, but he reminds me of how Carsley was. I've also seen him very quickly turn into the one fans pile on and it's no coincidence it's since he outed himself as a red. (Plus it's Twitter I see the hate from and it's toxic)
