What absolute tosh that is. I’m a wool and a I’m a proud republican. My mum’s from Liverpool and although of Irish Catholic background, it’s a fact the city has a very strong section of monarchists, just look at the history of orange lodge marches for a starter. Then you have areas like Garston that were electing Tory MPs up until 1983 (I.e they actually voted for Thatcher). Even Wavertree voted for Thatcher in 79. Crosby was Tory up until 97. With regard to working class areas, I’m guessing they voted Tory because they were fairly unionist and pro monarchy. So let’s stop pretending that Liverpool has always been some socialist republic and leave us wools out of it.
Time has moved on since all that stuff. This is not a religious issue and you know it. It's fundemantally true that Liverpool today is a city that has no time for toadyism or right wing politics. And that is as it should be. However, we have two organisations in the shape of LFC and EFC pushing this on fans who really dont want it. That's the issue. I guarantee that if there was a vote on holding all this stuff tomorrow and not holding it, 90% would gladly make sure it wasn't taking place.
