We've made some young signings recently as well

Mykolenko, McNeil, Vinagre, Patterson

We're also linked with players like Broja, Gallagher, Cornet etc

I think a big problem is that supporters don't look at a transfer window overall and instead focus on every signing like it's the only one we're going to make

It's fine to sign a 33 year old if you've also signed a bunch of lads in the first half of their 20's

It's all about having a balanced window and I think people need to be less myopic about this stuff
We have, and I never suggested we hadn't. The ratio is still way off though, in the last 3 seasons we've signed 13 first team players on permanent deals and only 4 of them have been under 25. If this is the next deal we do then it's 4 out of 14. As I said quite clearly, I'm not complaining about this deal and I understand the reasoning, my issue is with people saying 'who cares about resale values' and then at the same time crying about us not being able to spend and calling all the DoFs and managers every name under the sun.
Think resale matters more when you're paying a decent fee to get them mate.

We as a club have always brought in some older players for cheap/free who can provide a few years.

Barry, Gough, Martyn, Distin just off the top of my head.

Resale value only matters if there's a plan to sell them, the likes of Gueye would not be like that. We need to dodge the 26/28 yo for 25-40,m deals we've done way too many of recently
Again, there's nothing wrong with adding a few experienced heads here and there for cheap, it's fine. We have to be careful though because it's a dangerous game if you get the balance wrong. Next year we have Coleman, Mina, Allan, Townsend, Rondon and Begovic all out of contract and probably leaving. Davies and Doucoure are too, although they may be more likely to stay, while Vinagre's loan will be up. So we're likely to be trying to replace 7-9 players who have left without us receiving a penny for them. That's not easy to do, and it's why the bolded bit is just a basic misunderstanding of the importance of resale value. It's not about planning to sell people, it's about having assets which retain their value. We need to have a player trading model where we sell assets to raise money to buy better assets. That's how we can improve. If we have no assets to sell, we can't improve.

To be honest delphs legs were made of cheese strings and still hadn't gone, when he made the pitch of course.

He relies on his workrate , so in that sense I don't see a problem. If he was like Godfrey and constantly out of position needing to sprint at full speed every 5 mins I'd say no.

Is he better than what we have ? Yes.

Wish people would stop repeating this line. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a midfielder that isn't better than what we have.

Two year deal for a nominal fee is a great stop-gap solution. I'll be a little concerned if its anything longer.

As others have said, the search for a replacement for Gana must continue, firm targets identified by the new year at the latest.

If we find somebody capable we might even be able to resell a 34 year old Gana to a club in the Gulf where he'll never be asked to wear rainbow laces or armbands that cause him so much angst.

We dont even know if hes better than what we have.

Allan was considered the best midfielder in Serie A and he came here and got legged by everybody.

I think some people are gonna get a shock, hes gonna be blowing out his arse after 10minutes.

Forgive me, how many players did we "lose" about 6 weeks ago?

Lanolin’s post is spot on re ageing players on expiring contracts with no resale value. I’d add that this becomes a self-perpetuating problem in our financial situation as we have to replace the older players who leave for nothing with players who cost us nothing. With the limited productivity of our academy these will mainly be older/injury prone or otherwise ‘damaged’ older players.

It is a hard habit to break but break it we must (hating myself for combining a Chicago song with Yoda speak but it is Monday so...).
