The problem here isn't Gueye. The problem is footballing authorities insisting footballers make their private views public.
The significant factor is his home country. If he were to support any form of homosexuality then he would be persecuted in his own country, let alone be dropped from international football.

No one condones homophobia, there are really no reasons to accept it. Sometimes one needs to see the whole picture before condemning someone, for an apparent stance.

If he is a true homophobe, then he will be at a club that will re-educate him.

It's genuinely mad that we're scrapping round in the bargain basement precisely because of signing players with no resale value and people still think it's funny that resale value gets brought up as a concern. We are where we are so if this is the type of deal we have to do then I get that, but we're just kicking the can down the road with these signings, at some point this has to change.

It's very difficult to believe he'd be dropped from international football for wearing his club's kit. It's also difficult to believe that the club will manage to make him see the light now, seeing as they didn't manage to do it last time he was here.

It's fine to admit that he may have questionable views and that the club isn't necessarily a paragon of virtue but still think we should sign him, we don't need to make stuff up to support it.

Shocking transfer. Zero resale value. Can't believe we're not going for players under 25
I am assuming that this is a cheap stop-gap until we get to a point where we are not being heavily constrained by FFP. We need some battle in midfield and at this point in time are scrabbling around to find some spare change. Makes sense to me.

I said earlier in this thread that his home country treat homosexuals atrociously. I assume this is part culture, part religion. As long as he's not personally treating homosexuals atrociously then this is a positive. A mild disapproval on his part is fine by me. Best all round if he's not expected to give his public approval or disapproval on a regular basis.

Makes sense. Purely a stop gap. Even if he can give us 1 solid season. It’s a year closer to our stadium move, and are main priority is staying in the league until then. FFP hanging over our shoulders.

Must have been terrible having to wear rainbow shirt numbers or whatever it was.

Imagine him pulling a stunt like that if we're in a relegation battle in April.
I don't know your politics or values. However, let's hope you're never expected to publicly support something you really, really disapprove of. Next week at home to Chelsea our players are to wear Tory party ribbons, Land of Hope & Glory belted out over the tannoys. A highlight reel of Thatcher played at half time. Anyone in the crowd or playing staff tutting in disapproval can expect disciplinary measures.

I was hoping we might see one example of a young player brought in relatively cheaply, that we could develop but still be good enough to start games more often than not now. Perhaps some will say that's McNeill but that's not my definition of it.

I think they are being cautious to the point of fearful of taking any risks at all. We can't grow doing this but I do think we can stabilise as an average, mid-table outfit and if that's the interim result, it's objective achieved.

I agree completely with your point though. There has been a marked lack of ingenuity and creativity in the approach taken. I'm hoping that this is the pragmatic side of Thelwell and Lampard and I'll settle for that pending an improvement of sorts in results and performances. In overall terms it looks like we'll spend much less than received this year and hopefully have at least two if not three more signings to show for the loss of Richarlison.

We cannot grow as a club without profit-making on player trading. Whether there is a stadium to be paid for or not. It seems a dirty concept to some. I'd accept there are mitigating circumstances this year but I'd still have liked to have seen limited evidence at least of a more fundamental shift in thinking to how we go about transfers, not least where we are looking for players.

We've made some young signings recently as well

Mykolenko, McNeil, Vinagre, Patterson

We're also linked with players like Broja, Gallagher, Cornet etc

I think a big problem is that supporters don't look at a transfer window overall and instead focus on every signing like it's the only one we're going to make

It's fine to sign a 33 year old if you've also signed a bunch of lads in the first half of their 20's

It's all about having a balanced window and I think people need to be less myopic about this stuff

Good post.

I've not been massively enamored with the transfer business myself but I can at least see where Thelwell & Lampard are taking a super pragmatic approach - fleshing out the squad with a mix of young, experienced & flexible players on a budget. Whilst we're teetering dangerously close to a financial meltdown and possible future relegation scraps I do fully get behind the fact that this is a current necessity.

Should we improve on last season, both in terms of performances & position, it's at least a positive step in the right direction and would be grounds from at least some optimism. Lampard has said it himself - at this point we need to just take 'small steps' if we want to start swinging the pendulum the other way.
