Table tennis

In one match analyzed, table-tennis averaged 2.00 hits per second where as badminton averaged 1.72 hits per second. The badminton birdie travels faster but table-tennis requires a faster reaction time.

Used to love a bit of badminton as well, never tried squash though

Any guys or girls anyone interested in table tennis?

I run a club in Southport and we are always on the lookout for new players whether they are beginners or experienced players.

The season ends at the end of April and then we will be having practice sessions open to both members and non members.

Anyone interested please get in touch.

Happy to host a general discussion on table tennis too.
Did you know that the National Championships were held over the weekend a Rhys Davies a 17 year old from Southport came 3rd in the England men's Under 21 competition and will now be ranked in the top 15 senior men in England. A great feat. I'm delighted to say he's thrashed me in the past - I'm clearly in good company!
Played a few games myself in the Southport League, probably early 1980’s. Played for Mawdesley Village. The other venues I can remember playing at were Weld Tennis Club and an old gym in the town centre?

I played all 3 T. All need good hand to eye coordination and good fitness but the skill set beyond that is quite different.
The days of getting around a court at speed is well past me these days and don't think I'd be much use at TT these days as it's my playing hand side that has all the problems. Great games though, used to enjoy playing them, certainly need to have fitness for them.

I played tennis for many years as well as table tennis. Found tennis particularly difficult after tt as I found the racket was too heavy. Could only play tt shots so I could never drive the ball, I was either playing topspin’s or sliced backhand

If you played for Mawdesley then would you have been in the same team as Andrew Eden ( went on to win at Commonwealth games) and his dad Bob ?

Wow you must be a great player to play in that company.

Weld don't play anymore.

The gym that you are referring to was either the Drill Hall which was the headquarters of Southport TT ( gone ) or the YMCA who don't have a team anymore.

Yes, I played with Bob Eden. It was more of a favour when they were short. Is he still alive? I know Andrew too, vaguely though haven’t seen him for years. Bob actually named his dog after my brother

I stopped playing in 85 and at that time played for Burscough.

Didn't Mawdesley also play in the Rufford scout hut?

Don't know about Bob. Andrew doesn't play anymore but I believe that he still lives in Mawdesley. Last I heard he was voluntary coaching disabled players. No idea what he's up to now. Only saw him play once. One of the best players I've ever seen and I've played Chester Barnes , Dennis Neale and Desmond Douglas ( thrashed by all 3 of course!)

That’s right. Can’t remember who else played for them. I think I can remember a bloke called Barry who had a sort of Bobby Charlton combover. Think I only played a handful of games.
Just thinking of all the leagues I’ve played in over the years. Southport, Liverpool, Liverpool BH, Warrington, Halton, Preston, Blackpool, Lytham, Wigan, Trafford, Stockport and a couple of London leagues?

Early 1970’s we went to Pontons at Ainsdale for our holidays. Dennis Neale was doing an exhibition and asked players from the audience to play him up to 10 and win £100, which was a lot in those days. My mum who was a County player had a go. Dennis said be cause it was s woman he’d play with his other hand. My mum went 3-0 up then Dennis changed back to his proper hand?

Isn't Wigan the funiest league ever. Couple of seasons ago I played for Rainford and we played in all sorts of interesting places like Leigh Miners club where there was a massive fight in the adjoining function room where there was a wedding and 3 van loads of police turned up but the most amazing one was St Judes club in Poolstock. It was just like you had walked onto the set of Phoenix Nights. You played on the dance floor and almost impossible to move because it was so sticky from all the ale spilled on it!

Haven’t actually played at St Jude’s, though I have at the Miners a few times. My home venue was Platt Bridge. Played in the scout hut at Rainford a few times. Played there against Geoff Pye amongst others. Not played in Wigan though for a couple of years

Geoffs still going strong. Not a day passes without him picking up a bat!
