Because the manager doesn't play one...
He could have played Gray, Rondon and Richarlison as a 'proper' three if he was insistent on long balls forward. That was my point.
If not, you can't play to Richarlison like he's a target man. He isn't

That may be so.
But if you're going to play long ball footy, then use him up front and have Richarlison and Gray around him. You know, in a proper front three.
He was buzzing off being able to use Rondon earlier in the season. Now the bloke actually looks half-fit, he's not using him despite wanting to still play long ball.
Btw, the manager insisted on signing Rondon.

No, i'm saying that IF his tactic has to be long ball (it doesn't have to be, Benitez is choosing to play that way) then he can't play Richarlison central and expect results.
We're literally getting Pickford to hit balls out to Gray to try and win headers mate...
Townsend, Gray, Richarlison. You need to be playing passes into feet. And I would be fine saying we can't do it with the midfield we have except there is actually evidence from six days ago of us doing just that...

Irrespective of if these players want to play for Rafael or not, they are bloody paid as professional footballers to play for the club.
Some players like Coleman are finished. Players like Keane and Holgate are utter turd who have no ability to defend. Add a chopped and changed midfield duo and a lack of attacking threat up front and you know why you concede 3 each game and can't score.
The midfield and attackers are incapable of putting an effort in to stop the passing flow and the defence is clueless with no legs to chase a running forward.

Don't get that team today. So defensive when we needed to put them under pressure. They started nervous but grew in confidence when they worked out we had nothing. Townsend needed to stay forward- we had plenty of cover, but he was back in our half so much.

Was just about to say the same. Gets slated every week for playing him, now he gets it for not playing him. Honestly gang of absolute mushrooms.
Alerdyce come in and done what he was asked and got treated disgracefuly, reagardless of his football. All the work Moyes done of the years and everyone turned on him, who could blame him for taking the biggest job in football. No wonder Anchelotti legged us. Fans are fast becoming a joke.
