Messymascot's faith in humanity and ginger safe haven

I know Workington, that’s right up the coast.

I’m guessing there’s a few blues further down, as lads from Liverpool, went to work in the shipyard at Barrow and settled in the area.

We actually had a league team until the 70s but the geographical location of the club made it difficult as we are miles from anyone. Barrow used to be classed as Lancashire many years ago.

Honestly all the kind words overwhelm me at times hopefully there will many more good discussions on here.

Not really sure as I'm from Cumbria where 80% of folk support United or RS. The first game I remember is 89 Cup final and I wanted Everton to win. I don't think I picked them because they were champions on 87 as I wasn't even 6. My dad liked football but didn't support anyone so it won't have been his influence. I suppose I was ultimately chosen. It wasn't until 91 that my obsession with them grew. My first two favourite players were Southall and Cottee. It was the 90 World Cup that got me into football but as I say it wasn't until early 91 that it took over. I remember listening to the 4-4 draw on the radio.

Always interesting to hear how people became a Blue. So you had experience of how Everton could disappoint you from an early age, and you still hung in there. I admire your resilience!

When was your first visit to Goodsion? I suppose living in Cumbria, it may have taken a while before you got to see a match there. Mine was in September 1973 and we beat Bobby Robson's Ipswich 3-0. Connolly, Harper and Hurst were the scorers. Fans always say how green the pitch looked when they see it for the first time, but when you walk out onto the terraces (as it was back then) the atmosphere, the whole assault on the senses just takes your breath away, and the pitch looks the greenest green you've ever seen. Well it did for me, anyway.

I took my Evertonian son to see his first match for the Sheffield Utd game the season before last. Sadly, his first match wasn't as memorable as mine, but he loved the stadium experience. I hadn't been to Goodison for quite a while, as we live in the South East and for various reasons it's not easy to get to Goodison, but I got very emotional seeing the Old Lady again. I had tears in my eyes more than once. We were in the Gwladys Street end and it's a good job it was a sunny day and I had sunglasses on, so no one could see my teary eyes. I even started to well up on the bus on the way to the ground. Soft get! lol

My old work partner, who is still one of my best mates, was born in Workington - he’s a blue as well. His dad was the manager of the Timpsons shoe shop there for years, until they relocated him to another shop in Devon.

I've only been to Goodison twice the first time was against West Ham in the * season. The second was the Burnley game. 100% win record at the minute. I did sit with the home fans once at Old Trafford we lost that game it was Xmas 2007.

I thought the pitch looked immaculate although it looks a lot smaller in the flesh.

You may be a messy mascot, but you're clearly a lucky one for the Blues at Goodison.

My son went to West Ham's ground with a Hammers supporting mate shortly before we went to Goodison. He said the atmosphere at Wham was nowhere near Goodison, even though we lost.

Maybe in Goodison Park my luck reverses and I get some for a change. The atmosphere was weird because both times managers were under scrutiny for different reasons so initially nervous but once both games were won it was electric.

A small town called Workington. Its near Sellafield. There are a few blues here but it's mainly RS and United. Newcastle are probably 3rd most popular team. It's all changed now as glory supporters will support City and Chelsea these days. There was no fans of either of them clubs when I was growing up.

I can remember Workington in the league in the 70s. Mainly because I used to have those adjustable league tables as a kid, that you got from Shoot! magazine.

Do they still have the annual Uppies and Downies game in Workington?

Yeah but covid means it hasn't been played for the last 2. If it doesn't get played next year I do fear it might not start up again. Year on year less people were participating and watching and now even the people who went because they always did haven't got that excuse.

Workington nearly got into the Conference North a few years back but then fell on harder times. They were in a good position in the * year when all lower leagues were annulled. Maybe one day they will return but it will be a long road.

Weirdest atmosphere I ever came across was when we beat Southampton at Goodison at the end of the 85/86 season.

We won 6-1, but everyone was silent as we filed out at the end because the RS had won at Chelsea to pip us to the title. It felt like we were the team who lost 6-1

I concur, it was made worse by all the lower main standites waving their radios around and shouting that Chelsea had equalized, utter cockwombles.

Used to go regularly to see my home town team Peterborough so have seen Workington play a few times - the first being way back in 1964 when they beat Posh 4-0. So pleased to hear that you are home again. ?

Yeah, there were two cheers in the 1st half that were nothing to do with what was happening on the pitch.

We assumed Chelsea were two up at half-time. Was gutted when the half-time scores were announced.

Messy, I’m glad to hear you are back home and hopefully by the time you read this post you are more settled at home and have rested well (there is nothing like sleeping on your own bed)

You are indeed one of the chosen ones and Everton has been lucky to have you as a fan.

We have something else in common, besides our love for Everton, my passion for football began in the 1990 WC. I actually watched almost every match and ever since I have had this great love for the sport.

It was lovely to hear you story on how you became a football follower and an Evertonian. Want to share more with us? Have you ever play football? Or any other sports? I’ve never really play football, growing up in Colombia women football wasn’t something that was actively promoted when I was younger, instead I did synchronized swimming for a short while. I’m really clumsy too so I probably wouldn’t have done well with the ball anyway lol
