If you noticed the volte-face the club performs on players be they ours or targets it's clear he's not putting any kind of vision in place.

So, he must be doing something with the academy then? Oh, nothing there either.

Get in the bin you absolute fraud.

Decent counter argument. Everyone is looking for a scapegoat and he seems the obvious choice.
You’re right though in that we don’t know what really happens/discussions behind the scenes. So we jump to our own conclusions.
He probably has got his hands tied too.
If his primary remit this year was to bring our costs back in line then I’d hazard a guess he’s probably achieved.
I’m reserving judgement on him, but I am disappointed that we haven’t seen more young unknowns coming in for low transfer fees. Until this year I think that has been at odds with Moshiri who is impressed by big names with big price tags. I’d also agree with others that getting rid of him won’t solve the problem, it would just be someone else brought in without a clear remit and responsibility for the job.

Honestly don't know what he is trying to put in place now. Either he doesn't have an overarching strategy for the type of player or manager he wants in, or is being over ruled by managers or Moshiri. Either way he doesn't look up for the job from where I'm sitting.

A disjointed squad from multiple managerial reigns with glaring issues in a couple of positions and no real strength past the first 11 is pathetic. His inability to get the driftwood out is abysmal - he could have organised deals similar to Walcott's last year or Kean's ghost year for other players- if he'd only got other clubs to pay a percentage of wages we'd save millions without any impact.

Disappointed.

What is the extent of his control?

A DoF should have full control over everything football related at the club, throughout the age groups.

1 - He should select managers, the owner is the only one who can veto a managerial choice.
It's clear this hasn't been the case. Every choice has been Moshiri/maybe Usmanov

2 - He should oversee the acquisition of players for ALL age groups, paying particular attention to U18/U23/First team.
Signs are this is starting to happen, particularly at U23 level. Let's not forget that for the first year or two we had an academy transfer ban. He's also been quite ruthless with the culling of players who clearly won't make the grade. There is also the alleged closeness between our 'Head of Academy' (what does that even mean if we have a DoF?) and the CEO. Not ideal.

3 - For the first team (The Coach - with a DoF 'Manager' doesn't apply) tells him what he thinks is needed. If the DoF agrees he strengthens that position. The manager has some degree of input when a shortlist is presented, he can even add his own suggestions but he doesn't decide who we buy.
He stated from the off he prefers to invest in players with potential to grow and increase therefore value. That doesn't mean every young player is a hit, but their is more chance of a return than say an Allan or a James. Both terrific players but it's essentially writing off money to try and take a short cut to the top.

4 - Time. If the 3 points above are under his control you can't judge the effectiveness of a DoF for 4 to 6 years.
Brands is in his 4th year but he hasn't had the usual authority a DoF is given because the club/boardroom is disfunctional.

I forgot to add, as well as first team managers, he needs total control over hiring and firing of academy coaches.
He's talked of liking an Everton DNA. That's fine if we were regularly winning things for the past 30 years.
Sadly most Evertonian coaches of a working age are riddled with failure. Is that the kind of DNA we wish to replicate?
Forget the Everton old boys club. Hire the best attainable talent their is.
Sadly, as alluded earlier. Some staff are untouchable.

Since he came in we have not had a style of play which surely should have been part of his objectives. Even last season it was just get the ball to Hamez and hope for the best.

We have not brought in unknown gems, Iwobi, Delph, Gray, Townsend are all well known PL players. Godfrey was a boss signing but we still have to stump up 25m to a relegated team.

We have seen no development in the academy as we are still giving contracts to 23 year olds who were nowhere near the first team.

So style of play, recruitment & development of young talent he has failed on all 3. If we sacked him tomorrow I am not sure anyone would notice.

Not for the want of trying.

This player spoke up, maybe there are others.

But hey, at least we have our blue passports again.

It’s hard to judge brands because the work goes on behind the scenes away from the public eye. No one knows his remit, no one knows how much the manager over rules his influence, no one knows if mosh is tell him that he needs to signed james Rodriguez, rooney ect ect.
