The walking / hiking thread

Blimey.

Thats like comparing the boots I wore to Roger Bannisters trainers with Usain Bolts ffs!
The array of technical kit and price range is astounding and ever expanding. Part of me always thinks "what's the gimmick here" but then I was utterly converted to lightweight softshell garments when windy. Much more comfortable than a heavy waterproof when walking up a hill.

Many moons ago I organised a 3 week trip for the Venture Scouts me a few mates founded to the Lake District. National coach up, a few youth hostels booked, the rest spent camping/hiking

Anyrate, we were on Striding Edge, in terrible weather, but we had the gear and that, when we came across a lone bloke hopelessly lost and under prepared. So we shared some spare kit, and ushered him off Helvelyan (sic), down the eastern side. He was German, and so so grateful, he arranged to meet us all in the pub near where we camping and buy us a few pints.

Bought us all beer and a meal. And there were about 12 of us.

I have a great pair of Meindl boots and a pair of Salomon Quest's but frankly unless the ground is wet or it's a real tough hike I just wear my On Running Cloudventure's.

Semi-retired mountain walking guide - I always used Hanwag/Meindl boots (Goretex/Vibram) for tougher/higher hikes. Great quality and they fit me well.

Cheapo waterproof Karrimor for general winter stuff/snowshoeing.

Casual lower summer stuff I had some La Sportiva last but was not that impressed with the durability (to be fair, they were meant to be climbing approach shoes).

Got my missus a set of Hanwags as a present (yeah, who says romance ain't dead) because they do the bunion specific boots. Absolutely loves them, first time she's truly felt comfortable on walks. Good quality gear, but not cheap.
