Euro2020 Knock Out Rounds

It’s Germany vs England in a major tournament. Germany know how to win and have the ability to go with their mentality. We don’t.
Believe me, living here in Berlin, this is not the Germany of Uwe Seeler, Paul Breitner, Gerd Müller, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Lothar Matthäus, or Franz Beckenbauer. This is the Germany of Timo Werner and Leroy Sane, Matthias Ginter and losing to North Macedonia in the World Cup qualifiers.

Sure, Germany have superior midfield players. Kimmich, Goretzka, Kroos, and Müller. But they have no defence and no strikers, no Rudi Völler or Miroslav Klose. They have a great goalkeeper who has to play ersatz sweeper because his defence are sloths.

If England play to their potential, they are hot favourites. People go on about Southgate, etc., but if England fail it won't be because of tactics. It will be about the in-game intelligence of the players and their mental strength. That, too, is a key component of whether or not a player is great. Tonight will tell a tale.

Agreed completely with your point about mental strength. Germany have it in abundance, England collapse whenever the going gets tough.

Some Germans do. Werner and Sane have none. As soon as one or both of them are sprung from the bench, German's mental advantage shrinks by 20%.

You just have to look at the way England completely collapsed against Scotland to see how mentally strong we are. Meanwhile, Germany dug themselves out of a real hole against Hungary such is their testicular fortitude.

Game will be won and lost in the midfield in my opinion. England will struggle badly if they allow the Germans too much free reign in the middle of the park.

Looking at this year's competition, it's actually very surprising that England had never won the Euros before, whilst teams like Denmark and Greece had won it.

Southgate could fall into the trap of giving the German's too much respect in a very Moyes-like manner

Germany are a good side and should be treated with respect of course, but England should feel confident that they can give anyone a game with their squad

He needs to loosen the shackles a bit I think

Am I out to lunch on that or do others agree with me?

Emma Hayes: “Croatia’s switch to a high-press, engaging further up the pitch, created the opening for Spain’s second goal by exposing a double-up on their LB”.

Danny Murphy: “That Azpilicueta looks like a good player.”

She goes on and on and on!

More than once she was still labouring her point about something that had happened minutes ago when the actual commentator should have butted in and commentated on something important that was happening.

In commentary (or pundit land) less is always more.

Murphy is an idiot though with a false laugh!

Pragmatism is what wins you international tournaments. Look no further than Portugal 2016, France 2018, Spain 2010 and the list goes on.
