Everton Summer transfers 2021

Fair enough mate - myself personally I cant help but feel like we'll spend £100 million this summer on largely more slow tippy tappy possession based players that dont know how to make a forward pass with a manager who constantly tinkers with the side/formation and doesn't have them physically fit/disciplined enough to hold our own over the 38 games of the season.

I think Spurs did the right thing in sacking Jose despite him being one of my favourite managers but I worry we'll hold on even if next season is another bust as its now Carlo FC.

Yes all very fair.

My only issue with it is that we sort of tried that with Silva didn't we? Young manager, got Watford playing well etc and that didn't work either. I think we have actually tried just about every approach possible with managers and none of them have worked.

One thing this summer only buy players under twenty five. Only buy players taking a step up who are hungry and have ambition. Not taking a step down from a big club. More Godfreys less Gomes's and Bernards. We need fight and hunger and ambition as a base line. Look at Leicester. Our team resembles a bunch of Oaps at times. Buying a Trippier instead of Aarons or a Ramsey instead of Anguissa or a Zaha instead of a Bailey would be a big mistake.

All our managers post Moyes are largely the same for me - posession based with little regard for pace/strength/discipline/fitness its baffling how the owners haven't yet twigged on to that.

El Loco and Silva were two peas in a pod, Koeman was more bothered about getting a round of golf in at Sherdley Park and Alladyce tbf to him did an alright job with the squad we had at the time.

Carlo is more defensive than El Loco / Silva but for me he still has that nicey nice approach and doesnt seem the type to have them running up and down sand dunes / prioritising fast young players when you consider he went for James/Allan.

But he’s better than Holgate.

It's not the point. The point was if you're just saying our FBs should be there to defend, then let's just play Holgate or Godfrey there.

We need players, whether at full-back, centre-mid, striker, winger, whatever, who have power and athleticism, and are long-term solutions.

Trippier is 30, isn't particularly quick, isn't particularly strong, and would command big wages.

He's the opposite of what we need right now.

Like I wrote earlier
1. Better than what we have so improves the starting XI..
2. Defend and let the people in front do their job.
3. Godfrey will hopefully be a first choice CB.

It’s one of those things we could go around in circles on this, let’s agree to disagree.

When Brands came in he said only players under twenty five I appreciate Carlo wanted some more of his own players but we need to go back to that. Leicester have it right they buy hunger and potential there is no quick fix to competing yet we seem to try it summer after summer.

But Koeman at Southampton and Silva at Watford were quite different weren't they?

And yes, Allardyce did well, but made himself unemployable by just being himself and goading the fans every week.

Holgate
Gomes
Bernard
Iwobi

Can all go as far as I'm concerned they either aren't good enough or their attitude stinks, not bothered about many of our players beyond DCL, Godfrey and Digne. I think Doucoure and Allan are decent and James is a luxury who isn't fit enough for enough games. I would have sold Richy but he has had a terrible season we won't get our money, so he stays, he should be playing on the wings he isn't doing enough up front.

We need the basics first. A right back with pace, pace on the wings, dynamism in midfield as a basic. We could do with a leader at the back too, Mina is our best defender but is injured too often. Sell him if we have to and bring someone in.

But we need more than 'defend and let the people in front do their job', don't we? And btw, I think Trippier is okay at attacking. He's just absolutely not what we need right now. It would be a ludicrous signing.

We need athletes and good characters this window, and lots of them. Ben Godfrey has a lot to learn of course but he is a tremendous athlete and incredibly competitive which really a shines through when he plays.

Holding midfielder
Right back
Left footed right winger

We need to buy players who we'd anticipate to start every game in those positions. We then need to add cover in goal and upfront. I'd argue we also need another midfielder for better competition but that may be stretching the budget too thinly.

I guess that depends on how you set up and what your approach to how you are going to function as a team. As you have stated numerous times in other threads, we have no identity and no real strategy currently. A clear approach of letting defenders defend and bringing in capable players in front of them might be a good starting point.
Seems to work quite well for Athletico Madrid to be fair.
