You are though mate.
Everton don't get any additional sponsorship because of any image of being good guys.
Sure, there's some small benefit to sponsors from associating yourself with the good guys - Marcus Rashford benefits from being the good guy - he's been quiet eh?
The truth is, money follows audience numbers. Whatever way you spin it, more will watch Man Utd vs Real Madrid than West Brom vs Leeds and that has the value which dictates the TV money.
The way in which image matters to the sponsors is probably best conceptualized as a {0,1} set mapping onto a continuum of evil - if you hit the sponsor's tipping point on the continuum of evil, the sponsor no longer wishes to be associated with you.
Against that there's prestige and audience, which the sponsor will pay for. If you want to get precise and technical about it, it's a two-axis problem where the sponsors will generally tolerate a fair amount of evil, will tolerate substantially more evil to get a fair amount of prestige and audience, and where tolerating evil is priced into what they will pay.
But the fact remains that at a certain threshold of evil, it becomes counterproductive to associate with you. This is why pariah states exist in international relations, and why the name of Michael Richards is only heard today as part of a cautionary tale, or in the context of a discussion of syndicated reruns.
Obviously, I believe that the ESL is much nearer that cutpoint than you do. Again, this is the problem. The fact that my belief is reasonably sustainable, but that you and others disagree, is what motivates the possibility of open conflict. 48 hours ago, that belief wasn't at all credible and conflict was impossible. If it were certain, there would be no conflict. It's the uncertainty that's dangerous.
