A Season Littered with Errors

Ghost i disagree with your first post, in the sense that i think we have defended poorly all season, im sure the stats will back me on this and beleive it or not i think we miss stubbs. Ill hold my hands up and go against publuc opinion and say i dont like Jags at centre half, hispostitional play is good and he can block shots and make a good tackle, but for me he is not strong enough and to often he has misjudged long punts forward or missed runs of strikers duning same punts.

Agree about Jags - not about his positional play though. I think thats what lets him down.

Id generally agree but tonight to be fair he wasnt bad in terms of positional play! well better then usual shall we say.

Yeah.

Hes just more prone than most natural centre backs to get the wrong side of his man, give the attacker more space and just his general positional sense is sometimes questionable.

Done well enough tonight. Hopefully he keeps improving.

Lescott seems to make far too many errors for my liking. yes he is a brilliant defender, but every match there is at least one error, a misplaced pass or a poor header. if we're going to win at goodison he had better cut out those errors, because a team like chelsea will pounce on them, as we saw tonight.

Sounds an awful lot like Yobo his first few years with Everton and he's certainly improved in the "less mistakes" dept.

No reason Lescott can't do the same.

However I'll go on record as saying that I don't believe that Lescott has made near the amount of mistakes Yobo made in their first two years.

doesn't help when you're constantly being overworked, i don't even know how to describe the way he played, he was sort of like a defensive striker, he was always up in front with the attack, yet someone always got back to defend, ran the length of the pitch more than any other player on our team for sure.

he made 2 mistakes, he had one mistimed header, but had that been any other defender we would have simply applauded wright phillip's effort instead of criticizing lescott, we're only hard on him because he's usually so good. as for putting away the one on one, he's a defender he's not used to playing that way, joe cole couldn't score his one on one with the keeper, we're only getting on lescott's back because of the timing.

all in all people are unfair to lescott i think, and that pressure is only bad for him. imo lescott made less errors than most other players today, his just happened to be capitalized on, and stood out because they were late in the game.

Can someone please remind me why Jags was no good as a holding midfielder.....cause although i like him as a player he seems to be making a lot of last ditch tackles as a centre back. He doesn't seem at all composed or assured at what he is doing. I don't feel safe with him as the last line of defense....

I feel the defence are not to blame on today result the problem is midfield, as they are letting Chelsea run at our defence as they please, that's the problem we don't have enough midfielder on the pitch at the moment.

I've been thinking that lately as well ;)

I didn't like there 1st goal tonight, SWP was let in to that area without being marks and the close down was way to slow, which lead to him scoring the goals we could have avoid it, and SWP looks to have foul Lescott, he has no position to head the ball, so he push him instead.

Are you joking me?! Lescott (apart from that mistake) was absolutely world class. In fact im not going to say anymore because that must be a joke.

For me lescott has been our player of the season so far and for the 2nd goal he was waiting for howard to come and get the ball.

I thought he played well last night, but I know what you mean, his style of defense is very different to that of Lescott, he does seem to rely on blocking and last ditch sliding tackles. To me he seems to short and weak to be able to cope with the big strong strikers of the premiership. Maybe as time goes on we can use him more as a full back?

As for Sandman's post about Lescott, sorry mate, but you must be crazy, Lescott is one of the best players in the premiership and will go on to be an Everton legend. I've never seen a defender that is so good at so many things in so many different areas of the pitch, he's priceless and his current value should be as high as any defender in world football today.

The annoying thing is that non-Evertonians think that about Lescott. In the paper at the moment they have a 'Capello watch' thing where they highlight the English players in each match. Last night they gave Lescott 2/5, along with comments such as 'looked out of his depth for England and did nothing to change minds last night'. It had me tearing my hair out as defensively he was a rock, an absolute rock. That they gave Joe Cole a better mark compounded my rage.

Its purely because he plays for us, I dont give a crap if he never plays for england (well a little) as long as he keeps playing like that for us. When he's picking up the premiership trophy for us in a few years maybe they'll realise then.
