ECHO Comment: "Fears of Witch-hunt Against Liverpool FC" part 3

Liverpool and the south end. Listen to any football phone in on Radio Merseyside and as soon as they say 'Barry from Hunts Cross is on the line' or 'John from Garston' or 'Bill from Dingle' or whatever, I know they'll be reds.

Everton are a north end club, and places in the suburbs where people from the north end were re-housed as part of the post war so-called slum clearance orders have a lot of Everton support in them.
I was born in the North End, now live in the South End, I always noticed that nearly all areas in the North End, especially the slum clearance areas are full of Blues, Crocky, Noggsy, Fazakerley, Canny Farm and also areas like Scotty Road, Kirkdale, Walton, Bootle and even Anfield are full of Blues. I have noticed that places like Halewood, Garston, Aigburth, Dingle and most other places with the exception of Wavertree and Speke are full of RS gear wearing mutants. Obviously there are plenty of Blues in the South End and plenty of RS in the North End, but as you say there is a clear North/South divide with regards to the 2 clubs. I don't know whether religion played a part in it or it's just a coincidence? Probably a bit of both. Another strange thing about the RS is they think Celtic fans love them, when almost every Celtic fan I've met, especially the Irish ones can't stand them, the Geordies hate them to. When I've been on holiday and people know you're Scouse and ask you who you support? They'll nearly always be happy if you're a Blue and tell you how much they hate the RS.

Perhaps, if you're a team called after a north end district, you're going to struggle to embed yourself in the south end? If you're called Liverpool, it's a little easier for south enders to stomach, I suppose...even if that club is based on the north end.

Its a little known fact that the south end had their own professional football club (well, just about south end: Wavertree). Liverpool Caledonian FC.

I think it was a Scotty Road thing personally, because it's well documented that loads of Everton fans would come up from Scotty Road to watch Everton and the areas where these people moved to as you said are full of Blues too. I think the divide between us and them is kind of similar to Hearts and Hibs, there may have been a religious divide in the past and it's there beneath the surface, but because neither club in recent years has embraced or encouraged a political or religious divide it's not really mentioned. Celtic and Rangers and intentionally embraced political and religious identities that has kept all the nonsense going on in Glasgow.

South Liverpool FC, too.
