Usmanov

Ruh roh!

The UK government has been challenged by opposition MPs to impose sanctions on two billionaire oligarchs linked to English football clubs.

It comes after Russia's detained opposition figure Alexei Navalny called for action to be taken against Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich and Alisher Usmanov, who has ties with Everton.

The government said it was "considering all options for further action".

An associate of Mr Navalny's has released a list of eight individuals drawn up by the opposition leader whom he says should face sanctions in order to put pressure on President Putin.

Mr Abramovich, who bought Chelsea in 2003, and former Arsenal shareholder Mr Usmanov, who owns a company that sponsors Everton, and who has links with the club's majority shareholder, were both included.

They were described in the list as being among "key enablers and beneficiaries of Russian kleptocracy, with significant ties/assets in the West".

This is why Usmanov is not on the Everton board and Moshiri is I suppose. Looks like having Usmanov on the board would have had an impact on us but via Moshiri we have reduced our exposure to possible sanction.

Mind you Chelsea must be sweating just a little bit though.
Culpable deniability.

"Erm, the money came from my business ties. Not from my crooked multibillionaire boss of course, but from my own personal investments in sweatshops and illegal blood diamond mining," a visibly sweating Mr Moshiri told the International Trade Committee.

lol

Basically yes.

The Tories will do nothing though. It's easy point scoring for Labour, but given their funding and dubious links to oligarchs, they are not opening up that pandoras box.

Some trouble making politician in Russia is not going to be listened to by governments abroad. And nor should he be. He is inciting rioting in his own country. If anyone should be sanctioned, it's him.
Only issue is if he's getting subtle background help from America in their anti-russian agenda (not out the question- riots in Russia completely in their interests) - the government could come under some pressure to act.

Like was said earlier we're probably OK but I would be worried if I was Chelsea

the uk government wouldnt be able to prove jack against the big fella, just more anti russia propaganda by the media, the fact hes an uzbek national and imbramovich is an Israeli citizen probably escapes them!

Yes I think we are fine, and all the times people said "oh why doesn't Usmanov come out of the shadows, he'd do that if he was really involved" this is why.

Technically no money is transferred directly between him and Everton. It's transferred between companies and the club by way of almost exclusively sponsorship. It would be an enormous over reach to start anctioning people for sponsorship deals of related companies, and this government know, there will be a lot of much worse things out there in terms of their conduct.

I don't think anything will come for Chelsea too, but they are in a far worse situation if it did.

This protest movement will do what most others do, it will die down. The vast majority of Russians vehemently disagree with them (as can be seen by their pathetic performance in elections). They are a trouble making minority, who want a level of influence their popular support doesn't merit. Putin is doing a very good job with Russia and has really turned them around. He's also got a proud recordof fighting Islamic extremists in the MIddle East, unlike America & Turkey who have funded them.

What I've found amusing is a lot of journalists when reporting on this have said stuff along the lines of "Chelsea owner Abramovich and Everton owner Usmanov" have then had to delete tweets or comments and say stuff like "Usmanov who has links to Everton". lol lol

The labour party today I will upset folk is a pseudo communist party. It is not the labour party of Harold Wilson, James Callaghan, and in Walton J Heffer that was true labour and got my vote, not the crap of today.
