Hard to see where Alisson goes.
Of the lads they have, Salah probably has the "star quality" that Firmino and Mane don't. He could be called a Galatico and would probably have the character to handle Real Madrid (whereas I'm not sure Mane/Firmino would be of interest). RM have reigned in spending a fair bit recently and will continue to moving forward. I could see them having a punt on Salah, if the price was reasonable, but he would only come in after they sign Mbappe who's clearly number 1 target.
I could easily see them saying to Salah just wait a year, knowing his price just declines as it goes on. Firmino is another one I think has Juventus written all over him, albeit at a knockdown price or really a free transfer. These clubs have become quite smart at taking older players from the PL for knockdown prices.
There's a wider point here though. Players valyes are declining sharply and thiose 28+ are really bearing the sharpest drop. I don't think anyone is bailing them out with those lads.
Before the VVD injury I felt City may have paid silly money (£100-120m) for him. With his injury and their defensive stability though, I just can't see it. Chelsea- again tends to buy younger players now. Arnold has lost form. It's a bit of a perfect storm.
You mentioned about a "fire sale" if they miss top 4. Would you expand on what you believe this might look like?
It seems to be like there is no strength in depth in defence which is why theyre now having serious problems. We lose 2 or 3 defenders and we change style but they seem to just have nothing new.
Ordinarily they would probably just go and sign one or two defenders good enough to come in and also one top level centre forward.
Now, if they dont reach the champions league then it seems to be that there may be a (looking at Spurs) £100mil hole in their accounts which need to be filled.
So immediately theyre then in a situation where they need to look at contracts, potential fees, wages and ages of players to identify which of them are crucial for a top 4 push next season and which of them can be recycled for younger players at half the cost like Jota.
With that in mind they'll be looking at those starting players over 28 as well as the squad players who arent up to scratch: Shaqiri, Minamino, Origi, Woodburn, Williams × 2 Philipps.
My guess is...
GK: They wont be able to shift for the fee and wages and their backup is 34.
DF: 2 × Williams, Van Den Berg, Philipps all out
FW: Woodburn, Minamino, Shaqiri, Origi all out
I can see them selling those 8 players and then replacing them with 3 or 4 new players at low fees and far lower wages who can play in multiple positions.
Then i think they'll still need to sell two more players which would be from Thiago, Keita, AOC, Mane, Salah, Firminho.
Thats where the fun begins as i find it hard to imagine that anyone would be willing to pay the wages Thiago, Keita or AOC would be on! In addition, Firminho seems to be on the downward slope so i think they would struggle to raise £50mil for him at this point...and thats generous.
Its possible that they could seek to do a swap deal with other teams for these higher pedigree players. But even then, who would want to pay their wages and what would they get in return?
I think it would be very, very hard to offload the players they would 'need' to sell in order to balance the books....even a fire sale situation would be hard because of the wages these players are on and the only three sides who they could perhaps deal with would be Juventus, Madrid and PSG.
In short i think they would be in a very difficult place.
