Everton Youth Teams Thread

@BlueBailey Hello mate, do you know what date the Wigan u17s v Everton u17s premier league cup game is, was due to be this week, but looks like not happening, and the comp is actually still on at present, Burnley v man utd has moved from Tuesday [yesterday] to Tuesday next week-so thinking ours may be same, we need to win by what man utd may do in their game to be certain to go through

It was played last night. I don't know the score.

Any news on the U17s team for this game, particularly the strikers? We’ve played Kouyate and Cannon in an earlier round , presumably Kouyate not available . Whittaker has scored a number of goals this season ,he maybe 2nd top scorer behind Cannon but I don’t think he’s been touted as an out n out striker .

The Premier League is to introduce mandatory COVID-19 testing for academy staff and players from next week, reports Philip Buckingham.

The Athletic understands that at a meeting on Wednesday it was confirmed that clubs will be required to carry out lateral flow tests twice-weekly.

When will the new testing system be introduced?

It is scheduled to be implemented from the start of next week, commencing on Monday, January 25.

Why has this been introduced?

This was a decision made by the Premier League after consultation with academies.

Some clubs already had increased levels of testing in place, and at least one club outside the Premier League had already moved to test players and staff twice a week for all three age groups in the Professional Development Phase — under-17, under-18 and under-23.

Have there been issues with COVID-19 at academy level?

Staff have been more affected than players but it is not believed that infections have been widespread.

This move will be a precautionary one to limit the spread as much as possible and to ensure the risk remains as low as possible.

Chelsea reported a COVID-19 outbreak at their academy last week, although it is not thought to have affected the first team as they train separately. The Athletic revealed on Tuesday that the academy was due to reopen on Wednesday after a deep clean of the facilities.

What does this mean for academy football?

The government has determined that football is an ‘elite’ sport but the Premier League informed all clubs to close their academies for the under-9 to under-15 age groups, while the games programme for Under-16s has been cancelled and the FA Youth Cup was also suspended last week.

It is thought that will not return until at least schools are back with in-person teaching.

However, under-18 and under-23 football is continuing. It is understood that any return does not require government approval and would be decided by the Premier League.

There is no imminent threat of a blanket closure for academies, and it is unlikely that such a step will be taken unless the situation dramatically worsens.

@Ring master @blueloon

With Simms leaving (perhaps for good as his contract expires in the summer) who replaces him at centre forward?

Or could we be dipping into the transfer market for a promising replacement now the ban is over?
The centre forward and attacker position is probably our weakest at u18 and U23s level. Kouyate was our only striker in this years intake, and I guess now faces a 3 match ban. Cannon and Dobbin are in the year above, Dobbin is out for the rest of the season. So in theory only Cannon to cover U23s / u18s .
Broadhead may play down the middle , If he’s not sent out on loan. At u18s there are players like Isaac Price, Charlie Whitaker, Lewis Warrington who have played up front and scored goals but I don’t think any are seen as a centre forward able to step up to the U23s .

Itll be interesting to see what happens , we could mirror the 1st team when we played with two false No 9 s. Onyango has been playing further forward this season, scores the odd goal and at about 6 ft 4 ins could be moved forward as a temporary basis, but we shouldn’t ruin his progress by trying to convert him to a striker.

Letting Simms go on loan was a good move. However from what youve written it seems like we need to bring someone in.

Having to play players out of position not only affects them but others in the team at a crucial age.

The other guy I missed was Rafael Garcia who we signed from Fulham as a 16 year old. He suffered an ACL injury about 18 months ago , recovered but hasnt been seen lately. Highly promising but it seems still suffering from injuries.

In respect of the Academy ban ending nothing much has changed this season in terms of impact now. We were always able to sign up “foreign “ players for the Academy and UK players on a pro contract at 17 e.g. Jarrad Branthwaite. It is likely we missed out on players we may have signed in the 14. -16 age groups but we have signed a number of players at u18 from outside the UK - GK Zan-Luk Leban, Seb Kristensena CB , Sean McAllister midfield. It’s unlikely any signings missed because of the ban would be U23s ready now, but don’t know.

Im surprised we haven’t targeted the striker and right back positions to bring people in at U23s level , but maybe the opportunities haven’t been there . Can’t complain too much as last year we brought in two 17 year olds , Branthwaite, Jagne and a 19 year old Nkounkou and so far two have played for the first team. Two per year stepping up is something I’d settle on every year whatever their origin.
