You sure are about that?

“I guarantee you not one Wigan fan, or player, would swap that FA Cup for staying in the Premier League. They’ll remember that day forever.

"I know I will.” -
Callum McManaman

Of course, it depends on the club. For Wigan, winning the FA Cup is the greatest achievement in the clubs history. And winning the FA Cup and going down, is a different question than winning the FA Cup or qualifying for the Champions League.

I think most Evertonians would prefer winning the FA Cup than qualifying for the CL, especially since we haven't won a trophy in 25 seasons. You could argue that qualifying for the CL could spur Everton onto greater things, but you could also argue that winning the cup spurs you on too, great example of that is the 1984 FA Cup win.
Couldn’t have put it better.

We'd need a bigger squad and to strengthen the first team to have a chance of winning the league. Always seems to be the case whenever we've been there or there abouts in the past.

City are another level I feel.

I go the game not as much now but I get both sides of the argument champions league great for the club. FA cup great for the fans. That said if you go the game you want to watch your team win if you get champions league football you will have had a great season an seeing you team win matches so that’s also great for the fans.

If am honest I don’t think it’s a choice of one or the other I think we are aiming for both. If we get champions league an start getting it consistently it means we have a good squad that it’s self will give us a better chance in the domestic cups.

Let’s just win the league an the FA cup this season then we are all happy.

If it's a choice of winning the Fa cup or finishing top 4 for me this year, i would take the cup all day, and use it as a spring board like Kendall did in 84.

26 years is way too long
See this is what the "we need European football" crowd dont understand, it's the catalyst to absolutely nothing, it never has been.
Many teams have done it, including us, Bolton, Newcadtle, West Ham...etc getting into Europe will never change a clubs future long term.
The mid 80s run started with winning the cup, without the belief that generated no chance we go onto win the league. Just like Liverpool didnt win the league out of the blue, they won certain cups first.

Agree with this. We could scrape 4th this season and end up 8th the next. The prize money thesedays, whilst substantial, won't change things overnight. We also have to remember that the wage bill will go up just to keep the players we have currently. A cups a cup and you can't delete the name on the honours list.

Just look at Newcastle and now Spurs. The latter could well fade back to medicoracy in the next couple of seasons without a single piece of silverware.

I agree, though I think if a team has the financial clout to back it up (as we and the others didn't when we last got in) it can mean big things, as you can attract the right players without burning out the whole team and fading back into obscurity.

We won't attract real big-name players or keep the ones we have for long without it. I do think the FA cup winner should take the 4th place champions league spot though as it would make the cup so much more exciting again for English football, and the fans, the majority of who do not have the luxury of CL football.

Exactly mate, of course money wise it’s better for the club, so is selling the kits to the fans for ridiculous prices, making every penny they can from the fans.

As a fan, who goes the games how can you not want to win something, I’m my lifetime we have 1 FA cup, that’s it. Unreal statements.
In my lifetime ive seen us win 2 league titles and 2 FA Cups, if given the choice now I would take 4th over an FA Cup, I've never seen us play in the Champions League proper.

And before you ask, Season Ticket holder for the last 30 years.

Just think, in all the years you have been a season ticket holder, no fans born in that time have seen us win anyting, how awful is that

CL qualification arguably leads to increased future trophy opportunities and even the potential of a league challenge. If someone is saying FA cup this season and then a reduced chance of future trophies or we get CL qualification but no FA Cup this season but we have a far better chance each season afterwards then that makes the choice a bit easier.

Would still love to win the FA cup though.

My thinking on this has probably changed a bit, even in the last couple of years.

I understand it's a bit annoying when mainkly Liverpool fans makemockery of how many years it's been. I do think it's partly motivated by fear, they never really did it before Moshiri arrived, as there was little expectations we'd even win a trophy.

Partly to shut them up, but more that really it was all I ever saw us doing/I knew we didn't have the infastructure to capitalise on it even if we got top 4, I'd have always previously taken the trophy option. While we are not completely there yet, we are a lot further along, and with the DOF and manager we have, as well as the owners commitment we are now qualitatively better placed to capitalise if we got top 4. We have a manager who Christiano Ronaldo rings to congratulate on signing players.

If we got top 4, with the money available and the manager, we do what we do last summer but style it up. I would not be surprised if names such as Ronaldo, Ramos, Mueller, Boateng etc were not in the frame. You can add in thers, Rabiot, Varane, Casemiro, Modric. I'm not saying we sign them all, but 2-3 could easily come. People will say it sounds ludicrous, but it's no more ludicrous than saying a year ago we'd get Allan and James Rodriguez here for little over 20m between them.

We also probably get a couple of the young up and coming big deals over the line. Maybe Luka Jovic comes. Max Aarons probably comes and forces a move here. Puig from Barca, or if he ever gets fit the lad Dembele might.

You get the gist. Most of the above doesn't happen- or certainly doesn't happen as quickly if we win the FA Cup but finish 10th. Don't get me wrong, I'd be delighted with 10th and the FA Cup, but thats the reality of things.

We get hung up on being "winners" but now that probably means finishing in the top 4. Ancelotti knows this. People laighed at Arsenal for always finishing in the top 4 and winning nothing, but it contributed to them winning the FA Cup 4 years out of the last 7, alongside getting to Europea finals. Lets be honest, if we win 4 FA Cups in the next 7 years, we are all delighted beyind expectations.
