Howard

I don't think Howard's as good as the media think he is, I will say that.

But he's good enough for us. We've just been spoilt in the past few decades by having two of the finest keepers to ever grace the game; Nev and Nige.

I like him as a person and on his day he's a good keeper. This season he's probably cost us as many points as he's saved us though.

I just knew this thread would be bumped, as soon as the goal went in, and look what a surprise. Yep, it was Howard's fault, everyone happy now?

Still wouldn't swap him for any other PL goalkeeper mind you.

I really do despair, MOM nominations, kept us from a cricket score? another two points droped today from a howler, you really need to look at yourself when Bolton reserve keeper makes you look like a wally. Poor descions, poor postioning, cant hold a ball - thats just today.

Im sorry, ive tried so hard - ireally do want to rate him, i actually thought he had a great game last week, but hes neither good enough or consistent enough for us.

Final word.

Aghast. If you blame him for that game today after the entire team's woeful performance, tunnel vision it is. I know we're not converting you, but your lack of credit for him is astounding. I don't think he's the best goalkeeper in the world - that's unrealistic and naive, but I do give him more credit than you do and do think he's one of - not "the" - the best in the EPL. He didn't give up two points today, the team did and the fact that you're sticking it to him is unjust.

Completely agree with RFUS's post above - Howard gave up 1/10 shots, and the Bolton keeper gave up 1/3. Come on man - the stats don't even back you up.

Sheejus.

I think it's mental fatigue for him, which is where some of the mistakes come in. Nobody can play a full league season and then an international tournament year after year and still be on top of their game. I think he'd come back fresh if he had a summer with no football at all.

It's just not going to happen in the near future. After the Gold Cup this summer, WC qualifying begins the summer of 2012. Then Confederations Cup (please lord!) summer 2013. He'll be playing summers for a good chunk of time. I'm not saying good/bad/ambivalent, but when you're GK #1 and you don't play in MLS, this is the situation you'll be in.

I don't agree with you on Howard, I think he's a good keeper. However no one has the right to say said player "isn't good enough to play for us". Anichiebe plays for us, therefore an order of beans and toast is good enough to play for us too.

Watching Match of the Day now. I think I was actually harsh on Howard for their goal. And in no way was it a howler, as Neiler said. A howler is what Gomes was guilty of later!

All in all, he kept us in that game. I don't rate Howard as highly as some, but today he was excellent. To deny that is to ignore the obvious.

He came off his line to quick and got back too slowly. He was at least as far out of position as Baines was, man.

They both redeemed themselves later on, mind.

Don't get me wrong, Howard did poorly for their goal, but at the time I thought he'd done even worse.

And yes, they both made up for it. Howard in abundance and Baines in style.
