If we are signing older players because we want short term results then surely we shouldn’t be buying average older players?

Allan isn’t average but the other older players we are being linked with are.

This is what I was thinking.

Don't expect us to spend lots of money this window but the talk of no money to spend (or sell to buy) seemed a bit far fetched given the rumoured finances behind the club.

In some positions, an average player is a maaassive upgrade.

We are never linked with unknowns, the cheaper hidden gems.

I wouldn't say never, Lookman and Vlasic came is as unknowns but just didn't work out for whatever reason. There's definitely some value to be found, if you can identify the right talent. That should be what Brands is here for, not to sign top-6 rejects.

The problem I see with this strategy tho, is that the Dutch league is a far far inferior league to the prem.

In the prem there is no margin for young untested cheaper players to make a mistake, so they wouldn't get the game time and wouldn't develop in the same way.

The type of players that you're talking about usually need a season or 2 in the likes of the dutch league before they are ready to step up to the prem, signing them directly for Everton wouldn't work IMO. They would be put into the u23s at first ala Branthwaite, Nkounkou

Leicester won the league using these exact types of players, they still have some of them now.

Look at Wolves, they have loads of them, and have done superb.

We did it a bit with Lookman, Vlasic for example....but our failures at the time meant these lads just go flogged by fans and the club in the end.

It is very hard to get it right, hence not many doing it well.....BUT that is what Brands specialises in, thats exactly been his main job in the past, so whats the point in having him !?!

As long as he can put a cross in with that one foot, Coleman's runs and movement as an attacking full back is still good imo but time and time again his inability to stick a good ball in stops our forwards getting chances.

Yes, and he has since explained to you that he wasn't talking about signing players for the under 23s. I said I wasn't talking about under 23s either, and yet you've given a load of examples of...under 23s. I'm not saying we're not trying or it's dead easy or whatever. I'm just saying it often feels like we're shopping in a pretty obvious market and it's not really got us anywhere. Look at the sides around us in the table last year and compare the profile of most of their squads to ours. They are generally comprised of cheaper and less well known players, and yet they are competing (and in some cases outperforming) us. I've said before, 90% of the Liverpool squad that's just won the league would have been attainable for us at some point and instead we've overpaid elsewhere. We need to try to identify players who are capable of performing at a very high level for us but haven't yet hit the big time. It's the only way we can build a side to compete in my opinion. They are out there, but we've not been very good at getting them in for whatever reason.

To be honest with you .
In this day and age with modern technology and vast scouting systems anything other than young players are well known to to all the top clubs.
There's rarely any older ones that havent been noticed.
Long gone are the days of Tim Cahill mate.
