Saying “buy the best players,” is overly simplistic, though, as you know.Gylfi, Bolasie and Williams were all from teams below us who don't even have 1 CL appearance between them. Allan has nearly 30. Not that its the best indicator of quality but its enough imo to show he's way ahead of those you listed. Rooney's the only exception and if I'm being honest we should have kept him for another season, but 1 striker-turned-midfielder isn't comparable to an actual midfielder who our manager personally knows, anyway.
Buying 24 year olds, giving them a fat wage on a 5 year deal is exactly how we end up with all this immovable crap when they don't step up.
I didn't say that?Saying “buy the best players,” is overly simplistic, though, as you know.
We can’t attract the world’s best 27-29 year olds from the world’s best teams.
That’s where idealism hits reality, and that’s why we ended up with the best players from the teams below us in the league.
The only strategy for success is to buy uncut gems.
I didn’t say you did, I was pulling the argument to its logical extreme and suggesting you didn’t think that either, because nobody reasonable would.I didn't say that?
Uncut gems are gambles that can work but we need a mix.
This fanbase doesn't have the patience to allow those gems to shine.Saying “buy the best players,” is overly simplistic, though, as you know.

What we need is a pandemic keeping us all indoors every season for the next 5 seasons. This fanbase doesn't have the patience to allow those gems to shine.

5 year deals are handed out for ffp reasons, so the player is cheaper. We'll buy him just so Brands can hand out another 5 year contract to an aging player. The EFC special.
The only proper first team players they’ve bought in the last few years over 25 have been Shaqiri and Van Dijk. Both 26.Not a sniff of silverware in 25 years and some fans still champion signing nothing but inconsistent yooth.
Do you think LFC fans care their best players are all 28/29 when they are watching their side win Champions Leagues & League Titles? Nah ah.
Get him in!

Liverpool provide support for the argument for buying players who’re not yet at their peak rather than the other way round.
Mane
Salah
VVD
Allison
Firmino
All 28/29
May not have signed them at that age but all currently at their peak - history has taught us any young player good enough to reach a high peak is sold before then - Rooney, Lukaku, Stones, Barkley (to a lesser extent) and no doubt Richarlison is next.
Im personally sick of just signing players to do well only to bugger off elswhere before they reach their prime.
We need proven players in their prime now.
