With my workload reduced and more time on my hands, I've returned to being a 17-year old saddo and started up a new FIFA "world".
I've started it in the 1998/99 season, using the teams in that PL season, and deciding promotion from the Championship via a mini-league between the real-life top 8 teams of 1998/99 div 1.
In the interests of neutrality, there is no Man City (they can go whistle, even if they have made the last five years a bit more peaceful for us than they might have been!). Also, the big dawgs have been somewhat re-jigged to relfect how things stood in 1998.
Still, Man Utd have all the gold (Lukaku and Kane up front = Cole and Sheringham), while Liverpool are without Alison (so Mignolet = dodgy James) or any of the front three. They are 13th right now and can't buy an away win, but sadly in no danger of relegation. We're currently 7th and drawing a lot.... just like the real 98/99 season.
All the rest are a mish-mash of rejects, but reflect how the teams were. For instance, Coventry have a good defence (Shane Duffy is a BEAST at the end of set pieces) but little up front, Wimbledon are full of dirty buggers with no pace and Jordan Ayew partnering Glenn Murray up front. And Blackburn have Sigurdsson, who represents a formerly great midfield gone to pot.... coincidence or otherwise they are bottom after 19 games
At the moment Sheff Wed are leading. Batshuayi is tearing up the league with Perez getting a lot of assists. Leeds are second after a Christmas surge, having been in the bottom three early doors. There's only like 7 points separating 1st from 8th though, and Middlesbrough (yes,
Middlesbrough!) were top at Christmas, so this is going to be a cracker.
Suffice to say, it is far more entertaining than any real-world football I've witnessed recently.
