Cancelling this season's Premier League

Should football be canceled until August and this season declared null and void?

Thats the issue, some clubs could go under.
I can see a few teams up for sale after all of this.
It's only football FGS.

People are dying. People are losing their businesses. People are losing their jobs. People are going to struggle to pay their mortgages.

Yet all you seem to care about is football and your scummy club getting a tin pot.

I would happily see EFC go under if it meant that one less person died.

No need to cancel the season, simply reformat all European competitions, all domestic cups, drop the mid season break.

Oh, and just:

Revise the structure of the Premier League
Ten matches could be cut out of the season if teams played each other once, and after 19 matches the competition split into two 10-team groups with a further nine matches each to determine the title and European places at one end and relegation at the other.

Clubs would lose revenue and television contracts would need to be altered, but no solution will be perfect.

Aside from the loss of revenue, how are you going to ensure each team plays the same amount of home V away games in this hair brained plan?

They just need to pack in the ridiculous suggestions, and start getting behind the fairest, most legally defendable solution to this, which is you void a season that cannot be completed and we try to finish next season.

I mean from this they are happy to have a league that is structural unfair, drop 2 seasons of CL, EL& FA cup football, 1 season worth of LC all just to finish 10 games. It's ludicrous. Nobody will go for it.

Seeing the cricket isn't contemplating starting until the end of May you just can't see how they can fit this in.

The WRU has cancelled their league with no winners or relegation, hopefully more and more do the same and expunge this season horribilis.
A tough decision for the WRU but sound reasoning:

A board meeting was held on Friday to discuss the impact that the coronavirus pandemic was having on Welsh rugby and it was deemed ‘irresponsible’ for the season to continue.

Before reaching this decision, the WRU were given a presentation by medical staff that addressed three key factors;

  • Continuing to play brings with it transmission risks for players, coaches, referees, volunteers and supporters.
  • Some competitions require medical support and doctors in attendance.
  • Continuing to play brings with it the risk of adding to the unprecedented burden on the NHS and it would be socially irresponsible to do this.

IMO the only thing getting cancelled is the league cup next year, maybe the FA cup.

they are going to squeeze these matches in wherever they can even if it finishes in December, maybe take a week off and roll right into the next season.

The Euros were not cancelled to clear the decks gor the PL.
It was a decisive and correct judgement based on what dreadful circumstances the world finds itself in, right now and for considerable time.

Only our dithering PL seem to think it was for their benefit and its worth hanging onto the remnants of an already tarnished season .
Suggesting teams play in empty stadiums and in neutral grounds smacks of this desperation within them. The home team has no advantage whatsoever. Yet they have played that game away in their opponent's ground. I doubt it will happen but its the single minded "finish at any costs" attitude that is bugging me.

it shouldn't happen.

The UK govt could mandate that sky can be refunded sometime in the far future. There is no plan or money for the rest of the world tho.
There are so many legal wrangles should the season run past the end of June.... player contracts being the main issue.

@Keiran said that was fine and no one would kick up a fuss about it, and players would all just agree to stay on indefinitely until the season finishes.

Oh well then, that clears that up. That was easier than I thought. What is he going to turn his hand to next? Peace in the Middle East, climate change, perhaps he could solve this bothersome pandemic that the world is currently suffering.
