When Messi retires, Barca falls.
Depends what they do next.

They have always been able to maintain their status at (or near) the top by signing (or bringing through) the next global superstar..

...from the arrival of Romario (in 1993), to Ronaldo (in 1996), to Rivaldo (in 1997), to Ronaldinho (in 2003), to Messi (broke through in 2005), to Neymar (in 2013).

Problem is, there isn’t an obvious an obvious superstar to call on next, unless they somehow get Mbappe (with his cost, and Barca’s finances, that’s unlikely, likewise getting Neymar back). Recently they have gone for the next rung down...Coutinho, Dembele. Griezmann...over 300 million forked out, none have impressed. Dembele in particular looked a terrible signing before he kicked a ball for them...was never a Barca player.
