Lewis Gibson

Hopefully not another Garbutt. Sign a good contract then sent out on loan for the rest of it

...Garbutt surprisingly signed a new deal when his contract had virtually expired. His stock was high but he had little chance of breaking through with Baines ahead of him in the queue. I guess that said lots about Garbutt’s attitude and ambition.

The club are protecting their investment with Gibson, they can at least flog him if he does well on loan. I imagine he’ll be gone in the next day or so.

He could provide cover /rotation for Digne to get him used to first team football

I'm delighted with this news if true. I know it's only eye test but I thought he did very well in pre-season. I actually thought he was more impressive than Holgate. He's a good size, good on the ball, reads the game well etc.

I also think Holgate's form has changed the priorities at the back. We are probably looking to buy another young back up centre back. Well step forward Lewis Gibson potentially. Makes sense for him to have a loan until the end of the season and have a proper look at him over the summer.

Interesting he's been training with the first team again today, so obviously above Feeney and Braithwaite.I've said for some time that unfortunately I think Feeney will leave.

I know the 23s is a completely different level to Premier League football, but when I've seen Feeney and Gibson play together I've been really impressed. Both imposing and sound on the ball. Still think there's hope for Feeney

The Garbutt thing (and to a degree Galloway) never made a lot of sense to me. He wound his contract down and effectively saw himself dropped from the team as a result. Which if we're being objective is fine if you will actually leave. Could have had a good bowman fee from Bournemouth and probably played more.

We then went out on a limb to keep him, gave him a good contract and never played him again.

I remember earlier that year Howard Kendall wrote in the Echo how impressed he was of Garbutt and how he should be ahead of Luke Shaw for the England squad (back when Shaw was well thought of).

I mean there seemed to be a complete lack of plan, and I suppose with football as with life it tends to be younger people that suffer more when there is a lack of foresight.

I know Garbutt wasn't brilliant, but I remember him against Wolfsburg keep De Bruyne quiet. It was a bit of a one off, but it's more than Martina had ever managed at right back, yet he got the go ahead over Garbutt that season. All just very odd.

I'm hoping with this deal, all sides have given it the proper consideration, and there is a clear plan in place for the player, while the lad himself is aware of the obligations required of him to kick on. I like him.

I have often wondered if Feeney could play as a defensive midfielder, not the tallest but athletic and combative.

...like Hinchcliffe, he hits a ‘heavy ball’ so he was in demand after those games for us and England U21s. I was flabbergasted he signed a new deal for us, it made no sense from his perspective. I don’t blame the club for protecting their investment, I imagine they hoped to cash-in but Garbutt went backwards.

i have real doubts about his attitude and I note his form has picked-up this season when he needs a new deal.

I see your point but I'm not sure he'd be better suited to playing further forward. Personally I'd rather he stayed at centre half

Give him some games this season I say

Going out on loan after he's signed a contract by the looks of things. Hopefully get some game time in pre-season and put some pressure on the more senior players.
