STERLING STAKES HIS PLACE

fc halifax result.webp

A goal for FC Halifax after 13 minutes from Lonsdale when he beat Tyler Garrett to the ball from the cross into the box and put it through the hands of Griffiths gave the visitors a surprising lead but Richie Ginnelly curled one into the top corner on his left foot inside the box when Croasdale played the ball into his feet. Ashley Hammond broke through on goal and looked to unleash his shot but Musonda came out of nowhere and hacked him down on the edge of the box with a horrifying challenge. The referee had a clear view of the incident and brandished a straight red card for the Halifax player. Musonda left the field to a chorus of boos and the F.A. will take a closer look at the incident. Hammond was back to his feet and able to continue the game without any problems, he got his well deserved goal when left winger Sterling put a low cross into the box which bobbled through to Hammond who got his foot round the ball to guide it into the bottom corner. Sterling was ever present down the left flank putting a cross into the box which was cleared to Ginnelly who brought it down on the chest and hit a dipping shot that hit the top of the bar and went behind. A good win for Fylde and their first back to back victory since October.

leyton result.webp

8th place Leyton Orient hosted AFC Fylde in the Vanarama National League and it was the one goal of the game that was enough to secure the points for Fylde. Bellusci drifted in the free-kick to the head of Wright-Phillips who put it back across goal, the defender cleared it as only as far as Ginnelly whose header back into the 6 yard box deflected to Sterling who tapped it into the net, everyone checking to see if the linesman had flagged but it stayed down and Sterling wheeled away in jubilation after scoring his first goal for Fylde! Experienced defender Bellusci was a rock at the back for Fylde and was influential in starting attacking moves getting the ball to Sterling whose crosses into the box were causing havoc amongst the Orient defence. Ginnelly in the right position again to receive the loose ball and curled a right footed effort just millimetres over the crossbar. Leyton Orient fans disappointed their side could not break down a solid Fylde team who got the result they deserved and headed back North with the points in the bag.

F.A. TROPHY FIRST ROUND

Hyde result.webp

Struggling in the National League North division, Hyde were up against it from the first minute in their F.A. Trophy encounter at Mill Farm. Ferguson made changes to the starting eleven, Freddy Burton, Jim Kellerman and Martin Withers all getting a start, Ryan Reynolds partnered Morgan Feeney at the back. Sterling kept up his scintilating form when he crossed for Danny Smith who had the skill to kill the ball dead, shimmy past the defender and slot it into the back of the net. Danny Smith used his skill to jinx past Jake Pearson and played the ball to Kellerman, Pearson chased down the ball but he mis-timed his tackle and his high foot took out Kellerman, the referee gave a straight red to the midfielder. Fylde now smelling blood decided to up the ante, Smith launching a dangerous ball into the penalty area but miscommunication between the keeper and his defender caused a complete mix-up and Withers slotted the ball into an open net, the Hyde players arguing amongst themselves as they went down by 2 goals. Ashley Hammond put the icing on the cake after beating his man for pace and hitting a left footed shot hard and low into the corner. A comfortable win for Fylde as they progress into the second round of the competition.

DF: We look like we're hitting a good run of form especially around the christmas period when it's hectic. We're about halfway through the season and we look in good shape. Proud of the lads today. They've played well.

DO FYLDE NEED A STRIKER?

Fylde are currently performing well and are in target in their bid for promotion this season but the goals do not seem to be coming for the strikers lately. Tyrone O'Neill has not scored in his last six games and Martin Withers only has three goals 21 appearances, with only five of those being starts. We could delve into the Fylde U18 squad and see 16 year old striker Lee Lofthouse already has 25 goals to his name in 28 appearances this season. The local lad from Kirkham who has supporters calling for him to be given a go is certainly impressing coaches Barry Corr and Liam Rosenior. Could Ferguson be tempted to give him his chance?
