People forget Moyes gave players like Baxter a run out at 16.. Vaughan .. now people think 20 is still a kid with time to develop. If you’re not in the first team squad at 20 pack your bags. We’re about to buy a 19 year old for £35m and people think Broadhead has a chance after a nice pre season..

It gets hard to give Moyes his due as the years go by. Rodwell gosling Rooney anichebe aswell few more. I think Moyes set a trend with Rooney as every single prem club start throwing on 16 year olds seemed like the record was trying to be beating. Think Moyes beat the recoRd himself a few times.

Truth is I don’t want to call on Simms yet, but I’m skeptical. The u23s needed a massive clear out as there were many kids with no first team hope milling about. Clearly too good for u23 but should have been let go ages ago.

So Unsworth wants to win things and this held back Simms .. it shouldn’t have. Maybe he will come in with huge confidence after that season but I feel he is behind. At 18 you should have a year or two of u23 behind you and ready to take a seat on the first team bench.

This is not crazy thinking .. this is what I’ve seen from watching us and following our kids closely. I actually got into GOT because of the youth threads and so far no matter how good we think some kids are if they are not around the first team by 19 latest 20 it’s over. If they are not representing their national side as a stand out in their age group or higher forget it. There is always the exception, but that is what they are.

I’m not talking about having a career. We are brilliant at creating professional footballers. I’m taking playing for Everton. The gap to play in a top half premiership club is ridiculous. With the money we have you are competing internationally, not just with your own country up and comers. It’s merciless.

Edit: think I got onto a soap box for a minute...

Did this lad outscore Brewster and Greenwood? Or were they in the U23? Just wondering if he's the same age group and outscored them, why is he not getting a look in here and they are with the first teams.

He outscored Bobby Duncan the RS under 18 golden boy, who finished 2nd behind him in the u18 top scorers league by a mile.

Bobby Duncan has played for the first team this preseason and scored.

...not sure if this means anything at all. I don’t know Bobby Duncan but I presume he’s just a better footballer at this point than Simms.

I’m not sure the RS are a fair comparison. They seem to take youth that are average in youth football and throw them in to some success... heard from a few of the youth thread locals how many of ours outperform theirs but they seem more inclined to developing first team players as opposed to just having success within underage football... I wouldn’t know.. just what I’ve read

For gifted under 21 get on the bench for first team, if they make it good if not drop down to u23’s.

For very good under 23 give cup games and benches, if they make it good if not get rid and move others up.

Keeps salaries lower, gradual constant income and gives the younger lads a shot!!!

It’s easy this management thing.

Nice to see the young Harvey Elliott, yet another lifelong shoite supporter signing for his dream team.

Duncan came up in the Youth thread about 18 months ago, he was at City then but refused to re- sign as he’s Stevie G’s cousin and was RS bound. I’d have said two years ago he was ahead of Simms, with England appearances etc, Simms caught up rapidly last season. I haven’t seen enough of Duncan over the years to make a comparison but however you look at it our coaches did a fine job last season on Simms, taking a less skilful player and making him the leagues top goalscorer.
I don’t think in Simms case it’s a question of not giving him a chance in the first team pre season, I genuinely think he’s not ready yet . He requires further work to make him a decent goalscorer at U23s first and if we manage that he’ll get his chance.
