Maybe I’m missing the point ?

How does a guy who didn’t always start for Sheff United go straight in to our first team?

It’s not about having a manager brave enough to play a formation to suit him, it’s just the fact that he’s not good enough for us.

I think it’s a bit of a fallacy that every half decent youth player deserves a run in the first team.

Spot on. And the attitude of some fans doesn't help either: "he's wasteful/doesn't track back/doesn't tackle".

A large portion of the fan base called Arteta a crab who was stifling ‘world class’ Fellaini when the two played together. The idolising of that donkey shows how some of our fan base thinks though. They’ll pillory players with natural talent for not being peak Iniesta but will then worship utter carthorses. Note the number of chances a useless grock like Schneiderlin is afforded versus the likes of Deulofeu Dowell even Pienaar back in the day.

Wouldn’t call Schneiderlin a grock, he weighs as much as a bag of iceberg lettuce.

People seem to be obsessed with a potential midfield of Gueye and Ndidi or Doucoure. The same way they were with Schneiderlin when he arrived. The lot of them couldn’t pick a forward pass between them and definitely can’t control the tempo of a football match in order to win consistently. I’d much rather have Bernard Gomes and another natural player in there that can actually play football.

Even the best teams have players who can do the dirty work. Yes Fernandinho can play but it’s his positioning, work rate and tacking that Pep appreciates most. Liverpool’s midfield isn’t exactly made up of ballers, they’re workers first and foremost. It’s our forwards where we’re miles behind.

Of course our forwards need upgrading too, but our midfield is miles behind the top ones. They can look imperious one day then the next they’re getting overrun by Fulham. Liverpool are a bit of an anomaly because they play front to back so much that they don’t base their game around a good midfield. If we want to break top 4 though we need to have a midfield that can control games away from home against poorer teams and combinations of Gueye Siggurdson Schneiderlin are just not it. Gomes is a step in the right direction, a midfielder who can actually get on the ball, go past a man, engineer a one two, create some play. The rest can do about one thing each .

Think you're being unfair on Fellaini there. He was a very good player for.

Plus I don't remember anyone saying the bit in bold, never mind a large portion of the fan base.

A lot on here alone wanted Arteta dropped, let alone the rest of the match going fan base.

Fellaini falls into the Siggurdson bracket for me. A player good at one thing which means the rest of the team is unbalanced to accommodate them but they’re ultimately not good enough to make that sacrifice worthwhile.

Fellaini was a very good defensive midfielder for us. Particularly during 11-12 season. I think moving Moyes moving him further forward has done his reputation a lot of damage seeing as how most people just think of him as a long ball footballer now. It was good as a plan B if things weren't going our way but he was wasted there for me.

I agree on Sigurdsson though.

seriously don't know what Siggurdson has to do to impress people on here, Gets treated like absolute garbage despite scoring the same goals as Richarlison who gets rightfully treated as a king

Richarlison got his goals from open play and in less games and is a 21 year old still developing playing in multiple positions. Siggurdson is supposedly at his peak, has the entire team built round him, and takes penalties so the goal comparison doesn’t really hold much sway for me.

I’m not denying his output, he has a good long range shot on him and can thread a good through ball but in most games we play it feels like we’re playing with two in midfield. He runs around a lot (slowly) but the game just seems to pass him by. He has moments at the top end of the pitch but true likes of the Silvas, Eriksen, Hazards etc. impact the game throughout the entire match. I see Siggurdson like Dele Alli, good at finishing stuff but not great at creating the play to allow stuff to happen.

I hear that and agree with a good chunk of it but he still doesn't get the respect, He was our top goal scorer and people think he hampers the team, Maybe if we had a striker who could finish his dinner his presence would be appreciated more. He covers a lot of ground and tirelessly works himself to the ground in most games, He does have a lot of off games where he doesn't do anything at all but that can happen to any player.

Having an out-and-out destroyer (with very little technical ability) seems to have gone out of fashion recently. It's difficult enough to get by with centre-backs that can't pick a pass at the moment, never mind midfielders.

I wouldn’t class Gueye as an out and out destroyer though. He’s far from useless on the ball.
