Groucho's Fact Hunt

In Brazil, over one million tablets of thalidomide are distributed each year for the treatment of leprosy.
speaking of Brazil...if you have a standard thickness sheet of paper that covers half of Brazil, and you fold that paper in half 42 times, you will have a column of paper that reaches the moon with a top surface surface area of 1 sq metre.

It is estimated that humans first forged copper tools and weapons around 6000 years ago.

Steel tools and weapons around 2-2500 years ago.

So it took humanity around twice as long to move from copper to steel weapons than from steel to nuclear weapons...
Sounds like a version of Moore's law.
Then again, what was the delay in time between the evolution of shells and the evolution of teeth to crunch then with?

More than likely.
You could probably do something similar with the progression of microprocessors... but it’s not as cool sounding as the swords to atom bomb fact ;)

I love the old ‘perspective’ facts though.
The “Cleopatra existing nearer to the the invention of the iPhone than to the building of the Pyramids” one is a well known favourite:D

We aren't so smart as apes. We basically copy one another thinking we're brill, but every now and then a truly smart ape comes up with a good idea based on past ones, and we all copy the step forwards. Human intelligence is the exception, not the rule.

Isaac Newton: if I see farther than anyone else its because i stand on the shoulders of giants.

During the war the code name for the SOE (Special Operations Executive) in the War Office was MO1 SP. It was said that it stood for Mysterious Operations in Secret Places, and because of the perceived German lack of sense of humour the code would be perfectly safe.

"They'll be dancing in the streets of Raith tonight" a famous commentary gaffe by Sam Leitch though generally attributed to David Coleman for some reason, Raith Rovers are in fact based in Kircaldy and the word 'Raith' actually means fort.
Also Sam Leitch as some of our older contributors will remember was the original presenter of ' Football preview' the forerunner to' Football focus' which replaced it in 1974.
