As long as no other team in the league improves, then 7th is the least we should expect.

Wolves for example have the best midfield in the league, possibly Europe.

Even if other teams around us improve (as they all should) surely the sign of a good manager is to take his side above those around them? Whoever finishes 7th will also likely suffer EL burn out next season as none of those clubs around us have the squad depth (Wolves for example barely ever rotate).

If Silva is to see out his 3 year deal and get an extension and be our long term manager then surely we need to ensure he has the tools to push us on into a post BMD world?

That was what all those who have argued with me for months have advocated - Silva gets a free pass this season and 2 summer transfer windows to build his own side before we can judge.

Next season will tell us if he is the right man for the job.

Thats my point, we have been poor yet only 4 points off 7th - if we spend £80+ million this summer, bring in a striker, have Gomes and Bernard more adjusted to PL football and Silva has his own near starting 11 - he has absolutely no excuses not to get 7th and anything less bar a shock cup win should see him gone and not given that final year to see out.
I wouldn't want him sacked if he didn't get 7th next year although the football would have to heavily improve from this year which he's shown glimpses of, It'd still have to be a top half table finish but I wouldn't say I would be on board with sacking him because he didn't achieve 7th next year.

Which is why it would save him.

He in my eyes has no excuses for not getting 7th next season, we have been awful for 4 months yet are only 4 points off a side who's had a good season according to all the pundits.

He literally will have no excuse especially if Moshiri loosens the purse strings.

Cup and league are a different kettle of fish. By your reasoning we should be on our 20th+ manager since 1995 since we’ve finished as high as 4th with no cup successes.

It's not been as much as that, and net spend was around £60M
Transfermakt has it at 71M and I think that's probably close.

We sell some players and have that net spend against in the off season, we'll be in pretty good shape I would hope.

Your bottom point is the interesting one, everyone expects/hopes we'll improve next season but so will the likes of Wolves, Leicester, West Ham etc.

It'll be the size of our progression if any that will determine if Silva deserves to keep his job come next seasons end.

For me he has to get either 7th next season or 8th/9th with a cup win.

Anything less than that after more money spent in the summer and his own starting 11 / 2 seasons under his belt isn't good enough I think most would agree.

I agree. I'm not so sure some of the top 6 aren't a bit vulnerable, but we shall see. Not sure Wolves is going to buy too much more beyond Jimenez, but who knows.

Lets be honest.
After all the money spent , and the quality of the players available to him, this season has been a disaster.
A recent mini upturn doesn't cover that up.
The basic , absolute minimum that should have been expected ,was to finish 7th , and to be massively clear of any other club.
The end result is an absolute failure.
Massive improvement required.
Which half decent player is going to come here now , after this season ?.
After the end of Allardyce it all looked positive.
Now we are below Wolves , and in the ranks of WHU , Watford etc.
Tempting for foreign players ? I think not.
Top marks Marco on your first season.
I honestly hope that you improve , you simply have too mate

Money spent yes but quality of players? Seriously? Beyond our first 11 the quality of our squad isn't good enough to compete with man utd in 6th. 7th yeah maybe but wolves have got a good squad and theyve had a lot of in form players this season and our players have been massively up and down.

I think people expectations have run away a little bit this season take utd for example theyve had Mata, lukaku, lingard and martial on their bench for large portions of the season and are 6th. Weve had a disinterested walcott, Davies, jagielka, schneiderlin, lookman and tosun on the bench. 7th minimum no. 7th maximum yeah. If you think this squad is as good as utds and we should be competing for 6th this season I'd like some of that glue you've been sniffing.

Its so bizarre "7th minumum" where do these people get this notion...

lol lol lol not really sure who you think we are. Last season we finished about 5 points clear of 13th place.

The same as "top 4" or "top 6" minimum.

If people genuinely dont see that their is a hierarchy in this league then they are deluded.

Chelsea/Utd/Arsenal finishing 6th or 7th still gets them Europa League most seasons however to fall out of the top 6 (yes one place) would be seen as a travesty.

We spend big money, we are moving to a 52k stadium, we have a large fanbase, we have a massive history, we typically finish 7th, we should have kin standards and stop making excuses for underperformance.

We've finished in the top 7 twice since Moyes left.
