The Premier League is a ruthless business. Mourinho has just been sacked because he is sixth.

A club spending what we do has expectations. If he doesn’t finish at least 7th, he has failed miserably.

I think there were a few other reasons why Jose was sacked.

I see progress, a plan, and a commitment from the club to fund that. Having a hissy fit over a 6th, 7th or 8th placed finish isnt part of that plan. I very much hope.

But why?

We werent the only team spending money in the Summer, I think West Ham for example spent more than us.

We as a club have spent 50m on Davy Klaassen and Yannick Bolaise, we are paying Sandro over 100k a week, money has certainly been wasted.

Moshiri wanted this fella for a very long time, im almost certain he will give him the time needed, if this time next season we arent doing any better, then thats the time to have a look and consider our options. Certainly not 3months into his first season.

When we don’t beat: Huddersfield, West Ham, Newcastle and Watford at home, coupled with one away win all season and getting knocked out of the League Cup at home to Southampton, then I think it is very generous to suggest progress has been made.

Fine. Judge every manager over a few months.

With a largely brand new team.

Then watch some videos of our breath taking performances under BFS.

Then say no progress has been made.

That was West Ham’s first big spend in years and are coming from a lower base level than we are.

Moshiri also wanted Koeman, and invested heavily to get him. Koeman managed to finish 7th, an acceptable position at the start of the ‘project’, after two back-to-back 11th place finishes under Martinez. In his second season, Koeman struggled and didn’t look like making it to 7th and was then sack. Fat Sam got us to 8th, with the 6th best club form in his time here and was sacked.

Moshiri clearly has a minimum expectation. Silva won’t be escaping that if he fails to meet the bear minimum.

Halfway through the season is a good milestone to judge a manager on.

Interim- Not meeting expectations.

Full season - we’ll see how he gets on.

Finishing 7th and a cup run should be a priority for the second half of the season.

An early cup exit will see the fans turn. Guaranteed.

Neil, we've recently sacked a manager for finishing 8th in a dog's dinner of a season. What do you think will happen if Silva doesn't deliver more than that with a superior squad of players? All clubs have expectations.

If he doesn't finish at least 7th, he'll get the sack and deservedly so.

except we didnt sack the previous tosser for finishing 8th. We either sacked him because the football was crap and everybody bar kev the rat hated him OR we were always going to sack him as he was only a stopgap.

so i dont think last seasons position really comes in to it. If they just wanted 8th or a bit better theyd have kept the arrogant oaf or just gotten in a slightly better % football manager.

they will have wanted potential of more....a higher ceiling, and they went for it in Silva.

so unless we are a disaster under him and we plunge down the table or the performances go crap then he will judged on improvements in many areas, but they will only be hoping we can maintain 8th or do better as him and Brands get things going this season.

Depends what team he fields in the cup, if it isn't his strongest 11 regardless of the outcome it's a bad sign. The first 11 are struggling, the more games they get and wins the better, not just for progression but confidence as well.

Judge him by all means.

Ive said time and time again where we currently are isnt good enough, but ive also said I would give him a free season.

I expect 7th, if we dont get it then yes, its not what I expect, but it doesnt mean I would sack him, I will judge him on his 2nd season, that just seems fair to me.

And we 100% wont get past the 4th round of the cup.

Please tag @Kev The Rat in, as I’m sure he’d like to answer in his own defence.

So we draw City away in the 4th round, and we lose. The fans will turn, guaranteed? Ok.
Yeah, they will, because City will be playing their second string.

Going out to Liverpool in the Cup last year was the first real catalyst for it to turn hugely on Allardyce.

This 100%

This is probably the first season in a while where how we finish in the table isn't most important. Whether we are 11th or 7th doesn't matter as long as we have the look of a side that could realistically improve to bigger and better things. The eye test tells me we are moving in the right direction.

This wasn't the case last season at all. 8th was our ceiling playing that absolutely dire form of the beautiful game
