Home grown XI

You can't count Coleman as home grown, joined us 02/02/09 made his debut 22/10/09 just over 8 months later.
As for Big Nev your facts are way wrong, Nev played 39 first team games the last of which was the 5-0 defeat to Liverpool before he went on loan to Port Vale. 3 other players who should have made your home grown squad though are Steve McMahon, Tony Grant and Michael Ball.

I could have rephrased it to say 'academy-product XI', but it wouldn't have had the same ring. I'm talking about players who have graduated into the first team squad, rather than players who have been bought to be a part of that squad. So, Garbutt, Agard and even Joao would count as academy products, whereas Gueye, Turner and Gosling wouldn't really qualify. The cut off point is entirely arbitrary.

With Nev, the question was whether he's more or less 'homegrown' than Coleman. I was 5 years old when he signed for the club. I knew that he had been signed from Bury, but I wouldn't have known whether he was in immediate contention for a first team place or not. Your information indicates that he was a first-teamer, and so wouldn't qualify as an academy product.

I think you guys are getting hung up on definitions. It was meant to be a talking point for the best players that we have developed in recent times.

Coleman came from Sligo mate.

I know. I'm saying that you could argue that we've only produced half a dozen players in the last 30 years if you only want to include players born in Liverpool. I'm talking about players that we've developed in either the reserves or the academy and who have gone on to make the first team.

Stop being mean to Billy! This is bordering on popcornination. He was only trying to see if he could put a team together out our academy products.

Sh*te team though mate. Sozzlecopters.

You're right, the team isn't the best. I was hoping someone would come up with players that I'd forgotten about. Gavin McCann? We tend to produce team players rather than skillful individuals. I guess that's why very few players go on to better things once they leave us.
