Maybe because he has Siggurdson at 10? Or because we don’t have a midfielder like Fernandinho who can ply the holding role by himself allowing this two floating attacking players, a system that only City have the quality to play in this league.
Y, these things are at the centre of it. But you don't solve the problem by playing two of your best players away from their strengths.
Until we can get a holding mid I'd be getting Gomes to play there.
Its not his natural position, not ideal, but for the moment, it allows the other to settle into a better balance.

Richarlison-----------------Tosun-------------------Lookman/Walcott
--------Sig-------------------Gomes------------------Bernard

I wasn't convinced at first but Sig and Bernard work their butts off, they'll do the work in the trenches.
Bernard going forward, working more inside, is much more effective, he's and outlet, a got to man who will give you the 4-5 secs on the ball in transition.

If you play Lookman on the wing, then it sets up Kenny or Coleman to do more effective overlapping than just relying on balls to Walcott in space.
With Bernard linking more with Gomes - they are used to switch the play, dictate play, get the side ticking - be the cover in transition.
It allows Sig the free role to come in to the box and do what he does best, with Digne filling the space.
Tosun will get goals and assists with that set up behind him.

The key to winning matches is Gomes staying disciplined and working intelligently with Bernard, Sig and the two CB - in covering and transitioning out of possession.

Then, when we get a proper holding mid, we have a good set of options in the squad. At the moment the selections are a bit out of kilter.

The above is risky and its certainly not Citeh, but it gives balance and purpose and will make them play together more.

There is a bereftness to some of the attacking play, they are far from linking confidently, its disjointed and one off linking, its highlighted by missed opportuities to play the square ball against ManU. Bernard with a differently mentality would have squared that ball all day long.
There is a bit of, see what I can do with the ball, rather than what we can do with the ball. The 3 man Sig-Gomes-Bernard midfield is worth giving a go.

Some things look good on paper but a midfield three of Gomes Bernard and Siggurdson? Not only is there a lack of any defensive instinct whatsoever there is also a severe lack of pace. We could probably get away with it against some lower end teams at home but anyone else would run through us. Gueye is already posting league high tackling and interception numbers. What happens when we take him out of the team?

As I was pointing out, I think the defensive work of Bernard and Sig in these positions would surprise.
And they and the team would have have a more clearer purpose of what their role is in this regard.
I think they would thrive in the trenches.
And just as importantly they would be there to receive the ball in transition.
Which means a better overall quality of play coming out of transition than if it were Gana.
There is also the sense there would be a more collective responsibility, better teamwork in defence than Gana running round doing majority of grunt work.

It was noticeable against United how often Gana ended up in key attacking positions, the last guy you want there. It was also noticeable how he wasn't used in those moments.

With regards to teams running through us, that is up to the ability of Silva to have them working together properly. I have no doubt they are capable of doing it. Sig and Bernard have shown the skills, intelligence and character to do it. The question is Gomes discipline.
Its not as if its a diversion, its where the side is heading anyway, in terms of play.
The key going forward is to find a holding mid and a RW winger with pace, with Lookman (Vlasic) becoming back up to a Bernard or a more advanced Gomes.

A lack of pace only because Walcott would be dropped, but would still be effective in coming off the bench after 65.
But the side would be moving and linking better, with it being more dimensional, we'd be able to dictate play more.
The better sides, the ones we should be trying to beat, are easily able to read our play as it is.
I believe we will kick on once the side links better and becomes more dynamic. Thats when you increase the pace.

The pace issue can also be resolved in January with a quicker CF.
If its not working with Tosun the bring in DCL in the meantime.

He`s proving many wrong on here, they know who they are.

We’re scoring at a rate of 1.6 goals a game. That would put us just behind our best ever prem season for scoring goals (95/96 - 64 goals scored) if we keep it up. This is after 10 games, without his signings integrated, two of them played predominately with ten men. Hugely positive. We’ve only had one game where we haven’t scored and that was down to abysmal finishing against Arsenal.

I hate these kind of stats, I just want to win games and do not care if they are all 1-0.

If we’re scoring above a certain number of goals and conceding under a certain amount then we will finish high up in the league. It would say a lot about Silva if he broke our prem goal record in his first season.
