Could be anything mate. Poor maintenance, drive shaft failure, gearbox failure, control cable failure... you can auto rotate the helicopter if you have enough speed, control of the throttle etc but I'd imagine he'd either still be in the hover or moving quite slowly.

Why can't you have 2 on the back in case one fails ?

Well they are incredibly heavy so I would imagine that is the primary reason, then you have all the associated mechanicals that would go with it... Not really practical.

Got to question the safety of helicopter travel.
It looks likely that people have perished in this latest accident too.

No more dangerous than getting on a plane, mate.

We weren't meant to fly. Let's face it, nobody really knows how this stuff works (obviously @wainy and people of his ilk know the engineering/mechanics) but, bloody hell, the entire concept of flight is just mental, on the face of it. You put ya faith in the hands of God anytime you get on anything, really.

Horrid what's happened tonight. It doesn't look good for whoever was on board.

No worries mate. It can be done, and the pilot will have trained for it, but hell need good speed, altitude etc etc. The tail rotor is primarily to stop the helicopter just spinning itself around (which is what would have happened tonight) and to give the pilot some rudder. God I'm such a bore haha

Not a bore at all mate, it's something the majority of us haven't got a clue about so it's great to hear a professional opinion.
