I was thinking the same as others on here, can see the rest of the fixtures being postponed this week. Absolutely awful what has happened.

Got to question the safety of helicopter travel.
It looks likely that people have perished in this latest accident too.
You do. There's no doubt that those on board won't have survived but you can only hope that it didn't land on people on the ground.

There was a similar type of crash in Glasgow a few years ago. It spiralled out of control and crashed into a night club below packed with people resulting in a lot of casualties. It doesn't seem a very safe way to travel. Then again politicians and VIPS use them all the time and theirs never seem to crash.

I've been a helicopter technician for over 10 years, in the main they are extremely safe and reliable. When you have a catastrophic failure though, like what has so tragically happened tonight, your fate really is in the hands of god. Tail rotor failure (as is being widely reported) leaves the pilot with zero control and unfortunately the end result is inevitable. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone connected with Leicester and the people involved.

What can cause tail rotor failure

Could be anything mate. Poor maintenance, drive shaft failure, gearbox failure, control cable failure... you can auto rotate the helicopter if you have enough speed, control of the throttle etc but I'd imagine he'd either still be in the hover or moving quite slowly.
