James McCarthy

Too injury prone, and even with a bit of unexpected luck in that regard for the future, he has missed too much football and no chance of getting near the form he showed for Martinez in 2013/2014.

Players abilities always tend to get exaggerated the longer they are out injured, and he is no exception.

Don't know his contract situation, but longer term he is suitable for either The Championship or the SPL with Celtic. A loan would suit him in January.

To be fair mate hes got about 15 goals in his prem career which isn't that bad all things considered
14 in 259 games as a PL player apparently (that includes cups). You're right, it's not bad and I didn't mean to suggest it was, I was just trying to say that I don't think saying 'I saw him score a good goal once' is enough evidence that he can be a proper box to box midfielder. If you've ever seen him shoot you'll know that he has a truly terrible technique, and will never score a lot of goals because of it. I've seen Schneiderlin score good goals both for and against us, but I wouldn't say he can play as a box to box midfielder either.

Give him a job to do and he was good. Too much time to think and he was limited. Did excellent cover work for Baines and Coleman but is technically limited. Think Brands and Silva will be leaning towards technical players with a bit of umph to them. McCarthy has the umph but is not technical. Give it 2 - 3 yrs and Schnides, Davies and Gana will be replaced as they are not the full package.

I agree, I said the same yesterday actually. He's not an absolutely terrible player but he's nothing like what some are painting him as at the moment.

I do think there's a place for him at Silva's Everton.

He's quick over 10 yards, and has the levels to press high and hard.

On the ball he's got quick feet in terms of his short, sharper pass so can move the ball on quickly.

You don’t half overrate our players. McCarthy will always be a mid table plodder.

I really don’t know what you have watched over the years.

I think Silva wants aggression and energy in the midfield. And technical ability, unfortunately most of our midfielders lack the technical ability. I mean real technical ability that hurts even the top sides, not some who can pass it square 5 yards.

Oh so he's a defensive midfielder now? I thought you said you'd seen him play really well as a box to box midfielder making runs from midfield into scoring positions, but I must be mistaken.
Maybe you should read the post I made again.

I said that I thought he had the potential to be more than a defensive midfielder but that managers have habitually used him as a defensive midfielder because they know they can rely on him.

I may be wrong but I did read my post again.. I thought it was reasonably clear what I said.

Where have I overrated him?

What I said he's good at, he is good at. It doesn't mean we can't strive for better. But there's definitely a use for him in the squad for now, IF he can stay fit.

Yes but you changed the argument. You said you thought he could be a good box to box player because you saw him score once. I said yeah once in 5 years isn't great and then you said he was a defensive midfielder. You could have given context, saying you were aware that it wasn't a great record but you thought he'd been shackled, or saying that you weren't claiming he was ready to do it yet but you thought it was maybe something he had in his locker with the right coaching, but instead you just shut it down by saying he was defensive midfielder and asking what I expected him to do. Well, as it happens I don't think we often have used him as a true defensive shield, he's usually been used as a box to box midfielder but one who does his best work in the middle third and doesn't contribute a lot once he actually gets to the boxes, hence me making the point.

Not sure I agree. Liverpool’s midfield is full of players who run hard and press the opposition. Their job is to win the ball and get it forward as quickly as possibly. I see no real reason why McCarthy and Gueye can’t be tasked with doing that.

Obviously I’d rather Gomes turns out to be a player who can hold, carry and pass the ball as this would give us a dimension we don’t have.
