James McCarthy

He was poor for ages before he got injured. Would sprint 30 yards and slide tackle someone into touch, and then while revelling in the applause would let a midfielder saunter past him into the box.

Crab like passing too, with an irritating way of striking the ball, far too lackadaisical.

Is McCarthy this years Bolasie/Funes Mori

Spends loads of time out injured, everyone starts forgetting that he wasent that great (bar the 1st Martinez season) then we unrealisticly pin our hopes on some guy who hasent kicked a ball for a year to come back immediately and change us up!

Never change blues

McCarthy’s very likeable, a decent player when it comes to pressing and winning the ball. He’s not as good as Gueye in that regard but he’s a bit better on the ball than Gueye is (granted not the best himself). A decent option when fit because we see how much we miss Gueye when he’s out.

Though I should add that next season we should be looking to move him on. He’s not at the level we need to push on and he is sadly too injury prone.

You are the only person who has captured his essence. The funny thing is, the longer he's out the more uninformed observers become. It won't be long before he appears on the bench and there will be loads here clambering for him to come on and waxing lyrical about his great abilities. He was a dud before he arrived, one of old brown shoes favourites who he signed, alongside Kone and Robles, which was the spine of the utterly useless Wigan team.

That is your opinion , an opinion not shared by myself or a number of others here.
But, it seems that shortly we will all know where he stands with our new manager.
My belief is that McCarthy is capable of playing different roles in a team and I have seen him play very well as a box to box midfielder when he can make runs from midfield into scoring positions and can remember him scoring a very good goal like this at Goodison(not sure who the opposition were).
He is a strong tackler and is disciplined in the defensive midfield role and is used there a lot because the manager knows the player will follow instructions exactly but if the shackles were taken off he is capable of much more.

Man Utd it was, about 2 mins in to the game

The use of the singular 'goal' when talking about a player who we've had for 5 seasons tells its own story there to be honest.

He wasn't because he'd only just come back in.

And when he did play he was playing well.

Just like the season before that, when he scored that goal against Bournemouth and seemed to be in a run of form, only to get injured again.

The lad's a good player, but his hamstrings are made of chocolate. That's the issue. Whether a large amount of time out has helped those hamstrings heal a bit more is the question. If he stays fit he's a very useful player to have - it's just a big if.

Ive said the same for 3 yrs
He’s a mid table plodder, they who think him and gana are going to take us to the promised land are in fir a shock.

His fans though now have a get out of jail free card, because of his injuries, even though he’s played over a hundred games fir us. Most very forgettable.

I will wait for the, he was great v Arsenal last season, great in the derby the year before. Basically he’s a better footballer without the ball, says it all.

Oh so he's a defensive midfielder now? I thought you said you'd seen him play really well as a box to box midfielder making runs from midfield into scoring positions, but I must be mistaken.

I think McCarthy now has to be utilised in a hassler/harrier role alongside a sitting player. Not so much as Gana does it, but more as a more disciplined version of Davies.

I would have no issues with McCarthy starting in a derby, for example, as he is aggressive and puts himself about and is decent enough on the ball to retain possession.

You pair that with Gana and Gylfi and I think that could work in that situation.

It'll just be interesting to see what happens. I'm not counting on him to regain fitness, but if he does he can be useful.

To be fair mate hes got about 15 goals in his prem career which isn't that bad all things considered

I agree, I said the same yesterday actually. He's not an absolutely terrible player but he's nothing like what some are painting him as at the moment.
