I think the problem lies in the fact that it's a terrible, terrible, joke.... :o
 



They are shoe stretchers ....... in the old days of old real leather top and bottom shoes if they were a tight fit you would wet the leather and use those to stretch them to fit your feet better.......

This reminds me of the old football boots. Like clogs with a rock hard toe cap and studs that were hammered in. With a new pair, the procedure was: put them on, tie the laces and sit with the boots in a bowl of hot water for an hour. The theory was that this 'moulded' them to your feet. When they were moulded, you hammered the toes until they were soft. The studs were three nails through 4 or 5 layers of leather. When it was frosty and the ground was hard and slippy, you would take off the top two layers of leather which meant the nails protruded and gave you better grip. Helped a lot in tackles too! The boots were all the same colour - tan. If anyone had worn pink boots in those days, they wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes!lol
