The only silly choice was leaving out Pickford.

We all want to see how good Lookman and Bernard are and to see if Dowell can progress (Sig has played every game now).

That team should have beaten Southampton. Marco picked the right side.

Yeah, we'll ignore all the chances they had and say we should have won the game because our centre half had a header from the edge of the box in the last minute, after we'd brought on the players that people are questioning leaving out in the first place. Faultless logic.

What chances did they have mate?

I only half-listened to the game while I was working on the Benfica game, so I honestly don't know.

From what I recall, we had the better of the first half and Lookman (I think!) went closest?

Then Schneiderlin made a cock up and Redmond hit the post, and they scored just after that.

Then was it that Richarlison came on and because we'd switched to a 4-4-2 they pretty much had the run of the midfield. Lookman then had that chance but he missed and Walcott scored and then Keane had the header at the end?

So was it in that 15-20 minute spell in the second half that S'ton really had us on the ropes. I switched off around then because it started going off in the Benfica game.

This is just a flight of fancy. He's playing games. He's not involved here. And if he was he was referring to off-field matters anyway.

Let me remind you: we're SEVEN games into the Silva era - a man brought in to clean up the muck bequeathed to him.
He's business partners with our owner and is a sponsor of the club. There is a correlation between on-field and off-field success, and we're very far from where we should be on both matters.

What has Silva done in the Wnglish game to suggest he is the man to clean up this mess?

My worry now is, like at Watford, he can't turn around a bad run of results and we go into a tailspin akin to early last season.

His comments regarding the match last night and having no regrets are an utter disgrace, too. Can't believe they're the words coming from an Everton manager.

With respect, you clearly haven't got a clue either.

And it is definitely a knee jerk reaction as he isn't even into double figures as an Everton manager.
I'm basing my stance on the form he has shown here.

No, he isn't, but what has he done with the two other Premier League clubs that means he'll come good here?

It's not like Poch at Southampton, who you could see shown promise. This fella has done nothing at all. We haven't even had a new manager bounce.

Regardless: he needs time to get this club back to a position where it's playing proper football again. I could understand your anger if this was the end of the season and we were bottom half.

It's all WAY too early for talk of changing managers. Complain, yes. No problem. I dont like going out of cups either. However, all the talk of changing managers early is for the birds. It's not happening and it's wasted energy.

I think last night showed Silva just how bad our squad is
JJK is not good enough yet , I say yet in the hope he progresses to Seamus levels but I don’t see it in him
He looks like a converted winger who was converted because he has no real pace
For a FB defending is the worst part of his game
For a 21yr old I don’t think he’s good enough
Morgan needs to be sold
Dowell is not good enough
He has a reputation of going missing in games and went missing last night
Lookman is progressing and needs more time but there is a player there he just needs more time
Davies has stalled , he hasn’t pushed on from his first season and still makes the same mistakes
Every other top 6 team has youngsters better than him on the bench
He needs to be sold eventually
Tosun , Naisse DCLneed to be replaced
If some Turkish club will give us 15 / 20 m then take it
Get what you can for Naisse and DCL
Bernard is pure class and needs to start every game
We need Mina and Gomes to hit the ground running because apart from Siggy and Gana the rest of the midfield are crap
We need a CF as a matter of urgency.
Brands has his work cut out
No more room for sentimality
I’m all for playing young players but if they are not good enough then sell them
We need at least 10 new players for this squad to be taken seriously , with 4 /5 of them to be starters
A tall order but the time for Brands to earn his keep is here
3/4 more windows needed
Hopefully Henry and Vlasic continue to improve and come back ready to be part of the squad

I think it's equal parts he's obviously not going anywhere he has to be given a bit of time to build and yes he made a tit of a selection and subs so will have to learn from it. While the negatives are clearly there to see, he still needs to be given opportunity to build on them rather than binned straight away

I am still angry that we have yet another Everton manager who doesn't want to win trophies.
But you are absolutely right that it is way off the mark to talk of sacking him at this point.

It's not so much that they had us on the ropes, just that they had their own chances. As you said, they hit the post, Stekelenburg made an acrobatic tip over the bar at one point, Baines made a last gasp intervention to prevent Redmond tapping into an empty net etc. Just saying our team was good enough to win because we missed a chance that would have won it doesn't really stack up for me.

Please stop playing 4 2 3 1. I have had enough of it for the last 15 season's thanks, absolutely no need for 2 holding midfielders in every game we play. That said, the man needs time and a few more windows to sort that squad out. Would like to see a style of football emerge over the coming months, as we still clueless in parts as to what we should be doing.

Fair enough.

I think @Mikey_Fitzgerald is right to point out that it could have gone that way though, but I agree with you as well. That being said, they had plenty of chances against our first team a few weeks back.

End of the day, I don't think we lost because of the changes, even though I agree that seven changes was probably too much and in that regard I think Silva overestimated our strength in depth (which is the real worry in all of this, btw, because we tried hard to build our squad this summer yet past the first 12-13 it's pretty poor, still!).

So while I don't think the changes helped, we should have still had the quality on the pitch to win that game. We got the basics wrong again for their goal, and four of the five culpable for it were all involved on Saturday, ironically enough.

Well Davies isn't a holding midfielder. He was tasked with getting forward.

Plenty of teams play 4-2-3-1, it's just they have midfielders who generally get forward, not just crab about.

Unfortunately we dont have the central midfielders to play 433...maybe gomes will help

So to summarise, he picked a weakened team and we got dumped out of the cup. Silva has to take responsibility for that massive lack of judgement and ambition.
