well for me that draws a close to silva's honeymoon period.
im not impressed, and to be honest I dont think we look any more like a team determined to win than we did under our last 3 managers.

I hate to say it but I think its been a false dawn and it will be another long hard to watch season.
my only glimmer of hope is that gomes comes in and makes our midfield tick better. failing that, it will be the same old problems with the same players with the same attitudes, the same short comings and same mistakes with the same outcomes.

the moral belief and optimism at the club took a massive nose dive tonight. a heavy price to pay for not picking the strongest team and playing a negative formation. the blame rests firmly with the manager.
It can't be a false dawn if we haven't had a 'dawn' in the first place.

Silva has had no positive impact on us whatsoever.

In all seriousness that XI should still be beating Southampton.

It was another abject performance from us, with the main concerning question being “was the Fulham result the fluke?”

Ultimately, it’s early days for this new regime and we’ve seen some good performances and some bad. The glimmer of hope lies in the fact that some key players are coming good so far - Gylfi, Walcott and Richarlison spring to mind - and we still have yet to see the best of/anything of Bernard, Mina and Gomes. Add to that, the fact that Silva’s style is still chipping away at the residual BFS/Koeman mess in the players’ heads and it may still prove to be a good season when all is said and done.

I’d have REALLY liked us to win that cup, mind.

Kennys defending is outrageously bad for this level. But we should be able to score 2 goals at home against that no mark side.

The fact we left out all our goals, including a guy who just bagged 2, showed complete disrespect for the tournament.

We think we are better than we are. We thing are youngsters are good enough. We overrate dross. We give sentimental appearances to local academy kids. We don't play like the game and the result matters.

We haven't won in 23 years and a sequence of our managers have not even bothered to show interest in cup runs.

I thought Silva was different and understood what was expected. I'm very concerned after that tonight. It was exactly what Koeman did. And that went south very fast.

Well we're screwed if our squad isn't good enough.

People were clamouring for Bernard. People have been clamouring for Lookman. There'd have been riots had DCL started tonight. That's three changes already that people wanted.

Gueye should have been in, same with Pickford. Baines - he was always going to play and there's no point keeping him around if he isn't gonna get minutes in these games. Got to keep him sharp if he's going to be of any use.

Not sure we’d have won with the team that played v Fulham. And the point of the rotation is that players who aren’t playing get a game for their own well-being and as a chance to shine.

This was just a typical EFC display, the type we’ve been seeing for years and years. Frustrating as hell.

Let's be honest with 10 minutes to go we all know that the outcome would be a draw and lose on penalties as it's happened time after time and year after year.

We've managed wins against only Rotherham, Fulham and Saints.

Drawn/lost, and occasionally folded leads, to all of West Ham, Saints, Bournemouth, Arsenal, Watford etc

There hasn't exactly been a new manager 'bounce' or honeymoon period has there?

Kneejerk
If it was January then maybe but it’s his8th games with mixed players available etc
It’s cool

no where near a knee jerk . 7 league games and only 2 wins and then knocked out at home by a pretty poor Southampton side.
the only 'decent' side we have played were arsenal away , with a lot of the tougher matches still to come.

I cant really pick anything out that been has 'impressive' so far. but can point to this result the west ham loss and huddersfield draw and say 'not good enough' and be hard pushed to find excuses for any of those results.

I'd have played exactly the same team as Saturday.

I don't rate Lookman. Bernard is an impact player till he gets fit. I hate the fact we spent 25m on someone as poor as Tosun. I think DCL is our most effective striker currently. I think Gueye and Davies is our best midfield.

I don't believe I'm rotation when we don't play in europe. I'm utterly disgusted with the manager and he needs put right by the board and fans. We don't throw cups when we've won fa in coming on 24 years.

Well I'd say the positives are the fact that we're playing (generally) better stuff going forward.

Tonight showed that when we make changes we aren't good enough.

So I'd hope that means all the clamouring for Bernard/Lookman/Tosun/Dowell is gonna stop, yeh? Because evidently they aren't up to scratch?

Silva has his flaws. Defensively we are atrocious, but we were last season, it's not a new thing.

He did not 'throw the cup'.

I like ya Tim, but bloody hell are you this dramatic all the time? Everything's always one or the other. No middle ground.

Silva did not go 'I'm going to intentionally lose this'. He put out a team with - for my liking - one or two too many changes, but ultimately the same mistakes that have happened with our first team happened again. We didn't put our chances away and we didn't defend when it mattered. That's not the changes that were the issue in that situation. That team should have had the quality to beat a second string S'ton team.

The fact that it didn't is a worry. The fact that Richarlison and Walcott both mess up their penalties has seen us not go through.
