I dont see a dominant midfielder. There's some quality in that area of the pitch, but no one I see who can stamp their authority on a game and make a stand.
Couldn’t agree more. I see Gomes as a ‘short term fix’ but even so although he is an upgrade on scherderlin I can see Brands focus for the next window being on that dominant midfielder that you allude to.

The manager has been backed with a net spend aproaching last summers and we got the new faces in now it's upto them to show us what they're made of but after last season i refuse to be drawn in to any optimism around us. So If it's anything but another mediocre season ahead I'll be properly made up. Still think we're missing a top striker and a midfielder like Fellaini who's big strong aggressive and also capable of playing a bit, but if Allardyce could achieve 8th then there is not much reason why we shouldn't be pushing on from that now especially with Spurs not signing anyone and Chelsea and Arsenal both looking weaker than for a long time there could be an opening for a team to slip in above one or two of them if they aren't upto scratch.

It really astounds me the negativity of some posters on here. You have one blokeon another thread talking about how poor and how rushed our transfer business has been this season, another one (prior to the deadline day) talking about sacking Silva and this one talking about what happens if we suffer six straight defeats!!!

Tell you what guys, how about we look at the obvious pedigree and quality we have managed to get into the club in such a short time?

We have a potentially excellent partnership in Brands and Silva. I raise a glass to them so far and I’m looking forward to an exciting season ahead.

Football is a game of hypotheticals.

If you can’t talk to your mate about what would happen if we got off to a flyer and arsenal started badly and sacked Emery, and went after Silva; then why bother?

I like the way he thanked Marcel and Farhad for getting him the players he needed. He could always have used the Koeman go-to that he didnt have the players he needed if he goes through a sticky patch. It's all on him now and he's not looking for something to hide behind unlike our last three managers.

We have made great strides in finding quality young players with a hunger to be the best. This rebuild will take time.

I hope we are already assessing targets in regards to a dominant midfielder. I have complete faith that a good season will see one arrive here very soon.

We'd be going somewhere. Down.

Patience needed with Silva as he tries to turn this around. Although, he also has to show tangible progress.
Completey agree with this. I'm more worried about the fans getting on his and the teams back than Silva actually failing. I think it's fair to expect over the next two seasons he might have a period of inconsistentcy with results as he tries to gel new players and get new ideas across. I'm not saying our fans are bad but just think like last season they see all these new signings and hold an unrealistic view that we're gonna batter everyone as soon as we come out the traps. The team is there and quite decent but needs time to gel and learn Silvas way of playing. Just hope everyone gets behind them even if we get off to a slow start or take a dip in the middle of the season.

May have spent similar to ladt season has got rid of alot of dead wood and made a balanced squad we have players for every position and system now, still along way to go but id be made up to win a cup and top 7 finish

Agree with that - "more worried about the fans getting on his and the teams back than Silva actually failing."

Someone will disagree with me, of course, but I know I'm on the right lines here. There are groups who want him to fail before he's even begun. Be it those who didn't want him because he's 'flavour of the month,' those who can't see past the 'Martinez-like' comparisons (which are lazy and unfounded) and those who are disillusioned with us as a whole because of last season.

You could see yesterday from the way he spoke that if the team fails, it won't be because he hasn't been backed in the market or anything like but because it just hasn't worked. And if it doesn't work and it's not utterly terrible - and I'm talking a genuine relegation battle here - as long as it looks like there are signs of progress, let him carry on.

This is no quick fix. I think everyone should know that. Silva and Brands absolutely do and that to me is the most important part about it.

Let him get on with the job. Back him. Let's see how it unfolds.

I watched Bengime and thought he had the attributes to come through and stake a place for a competitive and dominant CM. I know he's had injury but I dont know what's happening there with him.

I hope what they are doing is having a quality player in a position with a youth to back them up - so DCL for Tosun, Dowell for Sigurdsson, Beni for Gueye, Lookman for Walcott etc etc.

The fact that it's not a quick fix is what people need to realise for sure but as you say some people want us to fail from the get go as it suits their agendas and will be the first to start booing and creating discontent. Unless it's really bad then I think we need to ride it out as fans as long as there's signs of progression as you point out. Of course we could come out the traps flying and have a really good season, the team is there for it. It could really go either way this season.
